    Now the older very long, cross-hilted claymore is also a neat sword. Here is a picture: They were very heavy and very, very long. William Wallace's was over five feet long! Here is a picture of the actual sword the William Wallace used: It seems like that would be good for holding a wide space, but...

    I found out, that the reason for the creation of the basket-hilt claymore, was because the Scottish did not wear as much hand protection as the English, and therefore they added the fully covering basket-like hilt to the claymore. (Which is the Anglicized version of the Gaelic "claidheamh-mor"...

    Yes, indeed! Just keep swinging it around in a circle and you can hold a big section. Then if a few guys get inside your guard, it has the leather on the blade so you can hold it there and it becomes a much smaller, faster sword.
