Brewers Make Bid for Free Agent Jeff Suppan

In a move to bolster their pitching staff, the Brewers have made an offer to NL Championship Series MVP Jeff Supan of the St. Louis Cardinals.   Brewers general manager Doug Melvin, in a phone interview Thursday, was quoted as saying "We stepped up and felt it was important to be known," although terms of the four-year contract proposal were not revealed.  The offer was first reported on the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's web sit on Thursday.

Suppan is a 31-year-old right-hander who was 12-7 with a 4.12 ERA at St. Louis last year, and went 1-1 in his four postseason starts.  His career record against the Brewers is 12-2 with a 3.29 ERA.

In helping the Cardinals beat the Mets and head into the Word Series, Suppan won Game 3 by pitching eight shutout innings.  In Game 7, he allowed only one run in seven innings.  Suppan and his agent, Scott Leventhal met with the Brew4res officials on Tuesday.  They made the offer on Wednesday.  Suppan and Leventhal met with the New York Mets on Wednesday.

I have just one question about this entire deal.  Why aren't the Cubs making it?

The Brewers announced the signing of Jeff Suppan to a 4-year, $42 million contract.  Congratulations Brew Crew!  Cubs, are you paying attention on how to sign a pitcher?
