    favorite Author

My favorite author of all time would have to be Stephen King.  I have everything he has every written, even those he wrote with Peter Straub and those written under the Name Richard Bachman.  If you read every book he has written you will see that they all tie in together in some way.  I find that amazing that he is able to keep all the hundreds of characters he has created fresh in his mind as he goes onto another book.  He keeps saying he is going to retire, but fortunately for his fans he hasn't as of yet.  Unfortunately his books somehow never do well when they are turned into movies, they just can't seem to make that translation....

Stephen King is my favorite writer, too. The Stand is my absolutely fave book. And his craft book, On Writing, is simply sublime! Some real gems to sink your teeth into.

Although I am not a huge fan of Stephen King, he does excellent work.  I , however, am more a fan of the crime/mystery genre.  My fav author is Michael Connelly (The Concrete Blonde, Blood Work, The Lincoln Lawyer).  As a former crime reporter, he has a way to draw you into the stories and lives of his characters.  I found him truly by accident, as I have with many of the authors I like best, when I saw one of his books on the "new releases" shelf at the library.

I am a fan of Hemmingway...the Sun Also Rises, For Whom the Bell Tolls, A Farewell to Arms, all great novels.  Powerful and full of life!  I am also a huge fan of Fyodor and Knut Hamsun as well as David McCullough who wrote 1776 and John Adams both two great books everyone should read.

While I can appreciate the classics for being great literature, my interests tend to lie with the sci-fi/fantasy genre.  Two authors more than any others have masters the technique: Roger Zelazny and Steven Brust.  There have been times when I have eagerly awaited a Brust book for years at a time, just to blast through it in a day once i got it.  The Vlad Taltos series from Brust and The Amber Chronicles from Zelazny are among the greatest fantasy novels of all time in my opinion.

Always looking for something new to read.  I used to be a huge sci-fi/fantasy fan, but had drifted away a few years ago.  Maybe I'll give them a try.  One of my sons is also a big fantasy fan, and I don't recall him reading either of these authors.  Might have two converts!

For fantasy, I really enjoyed the trilogy by George R.R. Martin! And I've heard Christopher Paolini (sp?) is good, too. Eragon. They're making a movie out of his book.

I am a true epic fantasy fan and really enjoy Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Tad Williams and Robin Hobb. Anyone else out there like them, too? George R. R. Martin is fascinating, too.

The Stand is also one of my favorite alltime books, I think I've read it 3 times and strangely enough, I think I've gotten sick with a cold shortly thereafter! I didn't really care for The Cell, though, thought he was too repetitive and the plot was too skimpy.

I am a hard core J.K. Rowling fan. I also really like Dan Brown. It is hard for me to get into any other books.

My son, who does NOT like to read, did read and enjoy both of Chris Paolini's books, Eragon and Eldest.  He'll definitely be going to see the movie when it comes out in December.

Mark Twain and C.S. Lewis are by far the top two writers ever to have laid ink on paper (imho)

    Re: favorite Author

Recently, I have begun reading the series of books by two different authors:  Philip Craig - J.W. Jackson/Martha's Vineyard Mysteries and William G. Tapply - Brady Coyne series (set in Boston).  Both are excellent, reads and sometimes there is a cross-over in the characters.  In fact, they have collaborated on two different books.  The bonus to the Philip Craig books is they often include recipes for the dishes mentioned in the book, the majority of which involve fish and seafood (and they are some GREAT recipes in there!)  None of the books is overly long, and unlike some mystery/detective genre books, you generally receive enough clues to at least get you guessing in the right direction as to "who done it".  Oh, and I should probably mention that both authors are avid fisherman and references to fishing (trout for the Tapply/Brady Coyne novels, artificial lures/surf-casting for the Martha's Vineyard series) are prominent as well, but even if you don't fish, or cook for that matter, they are great books.
