yea, I thought there was an 8 in the upperleft corner, in a light grey color. is that not part of the time?

You know, it could be. I thought it was, and used it for the hour hand. But I'm not 100% sure it was needed. The other number was most definitely necessary.

I just checked the Quest website again, and I guess the Journal will never be updated... I just wanted to know what place I got on the final puzzle, and if I was even correct.  Is that too much to ask? Sad

John's been sick this week so I will answer on his behalf.  But no we didn't get to keep any cryptex.  We had a blast in Vegas though.

Too bad on the Cryptex(R).  I did find pics of the Cryptex(R) used but not at my computer right now to upload them.  Wish I could copy and past the images on this forum.  You can get your own (not the vegas one~but order you own custom one) thru Justin Nevins as he is the artist that creates them. http://www.cryptex.org/r_home.htm

Hope John gets feeling better.  You guys ROCK!!!!

here are the images of the Cryptex(R) designed by Justin Nevins.

Wouldn't you like one of these?

I just wonder if the artist would consider doing a custom batch for a limited time.

If you want one email him from his web site. I'm sure he would let us know if that's something he would consider.

Thats definetly the ones we used.  There was also a 3 letter and a 4 letter one.

Travis, so what did you think of the Cryptex(R) Security Boxes?

That was the first time I had made 3 and 4 code ring boxes of this version.  Doritos was cool, but they kept changing the requirments on me and I only had like 10 days to do the design work and everything.  I wish they would have got in touch with me sooner as I had to make those boxes FAST!  I hope they worked well for the game.

Re: Doritos The Quest - What's next?

I thought they were made very well.  Al three of us were hoping we would get to keep one.  However, they were going to give them to people back at Doritos who worked on the project as momentos. I was especially surprised at how much they weighed.  They seem extremely durable and like they would make a great mantle piece. (Thats where I would put it.)

I did not personally see the 3 or 4 code boxes because in that particular challenge I had another 4 code one. You will see how they played out in the videos.

Any chance you could make another with the same logos and alphabet on it or would Doritos have to approve that?

Re: Doritos The Quest - What's next?

Cool, glad they worked well.  I do work very hard to make the highest quality pieces I can and by using solid hand polished brass components, it gives them a rich look and solid feel (I don't use dye cast zinc with gold paint... ick).  Most people comment on the nice size and weight of these boxes and are usually quite surprised by the quality.

Pity they wouldn't let you keep one, I'd think that was the least they could do.  I sort of figured that they were going to give them to people on the project based on the number they ordered (they trippled their original order but did not give me more time to make them).  They do make very nice mantle pieces and are particularly nice with the bloodwood display stands I make for the red boxes.  Plus they have a changable code feature so you can re-code them and use them for your own treasure hunts, puzzles or gift boxes.

I am anxious to see how they worked in the video.  I've made these boxes for other Movie and TV shows and its so cool to see something that you have created being used on the big (or small) screen.

I'm not sure if I could make another with the same logos and alphabet.  The logos maybe not because they are trademarked and it would depend if they had copyrighted the alphabet (which most likely they did not).  But if you're interested in something like this, contact me via my website as I don't want to discuss business on a message board (this space is for talking about hunts and such, not for doing business).

But I'm glad you liked them.

Hello everybody, John here. I just wanted to thank everyone for the congrats. I'm finally getting over my sickness. I'm excited to see the footage from Vegas. It's going to be really cool. I also wanted to thank you Justin for the great Cryptex(R) replicas that you designed for us. They were really cool.

Re: Doritos The Quest - What's next?

    Travis,

OK, I did some checking and it looks like "The Quest" logo is not trademarked, and from what I can tell, the alphabet they used is not copyrighted.  However the Doritos "Soundwave" logo is trademarked, so I'd probably have to get permission to use this which would be more effort that I would want to go through to get unless I was making hundreds of these boxes.

So as far as I can tell, I could legally make an additional box or boxes like the ones used in the event with the exception of the Doritos "Soundwave" logo.

The problem with this is that doing a "one-off" box like this would be a little tricky as I'd need to schedule a special engraving session for the different code rings which costs me more to do ($105) (normally I make boxes with Times New Roman fonts).  But if I had say a dozen or more orders for boxes with this symbol alphabet, I could do it at my regular price (or close to it).  Perhaps I'll make a limited edition set of say 12 of these boxes open only to people on this and a few other websites that have been following "The Quest".  I wouldn't make these available on my website because it would be such a small limited edition batch.

It would really depend if there was enough interest in something like this to make it worthwhile to do.  Otherwise I could still do it, but it would cost $105 more for a "one-off" box like this.

As you know from personal experience, these are not cheap mass produced items, so I can't really afford to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on making these special boxes and end up not being able to sell them.  I suppose I could take pre-orders for a period of time and then however many orders I got at the end of this period would be how many of these boxes I would make.

Do you think there would be enough people interested in something like this?

John,  glad you are feeling better and let me congratulate you and the other finalists on making it to the "secret location" to compete for the artifact.  It sounds like it was a great deal of fun!

Glad you liked the Cryptex(R) Security Boxes and that you thought they were cool, I try very hard to make the highest quality pieces I can which is sometimes difficult to portray with pictures on my website.  I never heard back from the show producers after I sent off the finished boxes so it is good to get positive feedback from the contestants who actually used them.  If I had been running the show, I would have let you all keep one as sort of a souvineer.  They did the same thing with the nested handcrafted boxes I made for NBC's "Treasure Hunters" show and as far as I know, they are sitting on some producers desk or boxed up in some prop warehouse somewhere (what a waste).  But I guess that is the way show biz is.

Again, congratulations and I'm looking forward to seeing the video on the 15th.

     Justin,

As much as I would absolutly love to have one.  I don't think I can convince my wife that I need to pay $350 for one.  Perhaps if enough people do show interest, would the box cost go back to $250?

I have an idea, John can buy us all one!  I'm expecting a Christmas present buddy. j/k
