Cardinals in the Hunt for "Red" October

Just two games behind the Chicago Cubs, the St. Louis Cardinals continue their push to the top of the National League Central.  Although they were last year's World Series champs, they have struggled this year and are still sub below .500

But, they're in luck.  They are playing in what is referred to as "the worst division in baseball" - National League Central.  Where else can you be 64-65 and only .5 game back of second - and just 2 games out of first?  Nowhere else.  After all, folks, this a division where just about anyone has a chance to win it.  While the Cubs still hold a slim 1.5 game lead over Milwaukee, if they played in either of the other NL divisions they would be in 4th place and 5.5 games out of first.  Heck, in all of MLB, they couldn't do better than 3rd anywhere else.

So, the Cubs keep looking over their shoulders and the Brewers, Cardinals, Reds, Pirates and yes, even Houston keep on coming.  Over the last 10 games while Chicago has gone 5-5, only Houston and Milwaukee are under .500.  Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are 7-3 and the Cardinals 6-4.  And those Cardinals are hoping it's their color you'll see in the post-season, not Cubbie's or Brewer's blue.

I guess what it will all come down to in the end is who stunk the least.

Nice post scoutmom.  If there is one thing I have learned in the last few years as a Cardinal fan it's this.  The regular season doesn't matter (as long as you make it to October).

2004 - Cards have 105 wins. Still cant get over the feeling I had as the Red Sox (wild card team) swept us in our stadium (I was there which makes it extra sad).

2005 -  Cards have 100 wins.  Back to back 100 win seasons.  This team seemed really special.  That is until they lost to the Astros (wild card again) and missed the world series.

2006 - Cards have 83 wins.  Still not sure how Houston wasn't able to catch us but you know how this one ended.  It was fun seeing those over confident Met fans watch their team fall just like I had endured the previous 2 seasons.

I hope the Cubs can do something this year if the Cards don't catch up.  It will be interesting to see who the scapegoat will be if the Cubs have a playoff meltdown this year.  Anybody know if Steve Bartman is still alive?

Regardless of what happens it should be a good September for a baseball fan.

I can't decide who wants this less - Cubs?  Brewers?  Cardinals?  It doesn't seem to matter who loses, they ALL lose!!  Just so long as the stinking Mets DON'T win!!
