    Correct!

ACB, an arrow is verry different from the sword, Justin knows what he's talking about when he made the above post. And an arrow shot from a long bow, well, it worked VERY WELL!!!

And Justin, about your other post, "wouldn't a hard thrust penetrate?" Yes, LOL! But you can penetrate anything with a hard enough thrust! The probolm is, making the thrust hard enough! It probably would on average, unless I had a good coat of mail, but if I were to take you on like that, I wouldn't use the broad sword, I would use the halberd! Smile And as far as the wieght, I wouldn't be abble to strike as quick, or parry as well, but if I did strike, a good down ward blow, you would have to move pretty quick! And if you were just a fraction of a second too slow, sorry, but you're either dead, or wounded very badly. Big Smile

    Am I getting annoying?

Ok, I have a little time now. What is a "good" coat of mail? Riveted chain mail? Yeah, I guess I would have to make myself pretty scarce in the general area of that sharp steel! LOL!

I was going to ask that too, what does a good coat of mail consist of, I will probably show my ignorance in this post because I don't know very much about armor and stuff. But does a good coat of mail have the chain mail and the hard plated armor? I don't know, can you have both at the same time?

I'm not sure what it's made of either.

ACB, and JBR, You appear to know what chain mail is, but a good one, depends on the metal, and how closely and well each individual link is put together, a chain is only as strong, as it's weakest link. The plate you are probably thinking of, is called a breast-plate, it is seperate from the chain mail. And yes, you can have both on at the same time.

Am I right Justin, or am I off?

Always mystify, mislead, and surprise the enemy, if possible; and when you strike and overcome him, never give up the pursuit as long as your men have strength to follow; for an army routed, if hotly pursued, becomes panic-stricken, and can then be destroyed by half their number. The other rule is, never fight against heavy odds, if by any possible maneuvering you can hurl your own force on only a part, and that the weakest part, of your enemy and crush it. Such tactics will win every time, and a small army may thus destroy a large one in detail, and repeated victory will make it invincible." - Stonewall Jackson

That sounds right to me. Typical armor for a knight, I believe, consisted of a padded leather or cotton arming jacket, then a chain mail hauberk, then plate armor (a breastplate). For the most part, it was the same for the whole body. The best chain mail that I know of, for combat, is made of welded steel rings. I don't know if the welded steel is historically accurate though, do you knight? If I was going to buy a hauberk I would probably buy one with 4 to 1butted aluminum rings, not very strong, but lightweight and it would not rust.

Didn't the knights ever suffer from heat stroke or something like that? It seems like they wore allot of clothing, and I would think that it would be overpowering.

I don't know! LOL! Yes, they really did. I like the leather gambesons, I think that's what they are called, leather with steel plates, about 1 inch by 2 inches. Pretty tough and mobile, and they look pretty good too! Smile

I was going to try to find a cross-section of the different layers, but this is the best I could find. It is a pretty good picture of late medieval armor, note the mace. And very long spurs! LOL! Smile

Here is what it would look like on the back.

I hope I am not getting carried away, but I love talking about this kind of thing!

These people have a pretty good selection of mail, although you can buy some of the thing cheaper elsewhere. Personally, I think the riveted stuff looks bad, but I guess it is tough. You would not catch me making mail of any kind though! It seems like It would take forever! LOL!

Here is a picture of some up close.

Wow! That looks something like what I saw in the "Arms and Armor" exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
