SLH asked me to pass this on back in March. I feel terrible for not posting it until now, I kind of forgot about it, but here it is.
"I have thought recently that I should make a post (but have not found the time - maybe you can just pass along this information) to let everyone know that William and Mary's president resigned. He was informed a few weeks ago that his contract would not be renewed in June, so he turned in his resignation, effective immediately, the next day. His supporters say some who did not like him were making two mole hill type controversies into mountains; those controversies being (1) he removed the cross from Wren Chapel (all the hunters know about that) and (2)he did not ban an adult sex worker's show from campus; he said for freedom of expressions sake, they should be allowed on campus. His opponents say those controversies had nothing to do with it, but that he was not fulfilling all his responsibilities as president, which would include public relations, fundraising, and I do not remember what else.
He was apparently a very popular president who helped students move into dorm rooms and showed up at meetings to see what was going on, etc. There were protests such as professors canceling classes for a day to as long as a week and professors holding office hours and/or classes outside (I did not understand how that was a protest, but that is what I read). At least two board members resigned because they said the firing was unjustified."
