I have not been able to actually do the kakuro (that's tough, just getting the right numbers for the 'clues') but the final hint is Jesse B. Thomas and the pillare is The Missouri Compromise (of 1820)

so I know the answer now, thank you Redhatty, but Im trying to fill it in: I dont know how to capture the image though so can anyone fill me in?  Ive got all but four or so...

to capture a pic, use the print screen key & then some app, I use paint, and crop out the part you want to keep, open a new page & past in the kept part & name it, then use a pic hosting site (since it appears we cannot upload here) like flickr or photobucket & link to it here.

Can someone post the answers to the questions? I would do it, but I'm pretty sure I've got quite a few wrong. When I try to use the automatic kakuro solver, it tells me that I have an error...no solve is possible with the numbers I provided. :-(    And I'm really not sure about #7...I can't come up with a clear answer the way the question's worded.  How 'bout the rest of you???

This is what I found: French nobleman Pierre Dugua de Monts (Sieur de Monts) established a settlement on Saint Croix Island in June of 1604 - add 3 to the sum of all digits & I got 14.  But I also have wrong answers so... IDK

I also have wrong answers, but I got 18 for #7.  Something about the French speaking population being so large than in 1905 they attempted an off shoot of Maine.

 Madmad, hit the Prt Scrn button on your keyboard, then paste the picture into a program like Paint. Then, save it. Next.... just email it to me lol I will put it up

I got the answer to the Kakuro from Madmad, but she had some technical difficulties copying & posting the screenshot for everyone - so she asked me to post it.
