"7. I drew this conclusion from the lack of reports of Southern supporters in the North having a large impact in the War.  I would be willing to scratch this point off the list if you could show me a couple of unisolated events.  I believe this can possibly be contributed to the fact that the War took place in the South.  A distance detachment could have kept the Southern supporters in the North a little more quiet than the Northern supporters in the South."

It might have had something to do, with Lincoln throwing people in jail if they spoke up for the south.

Re: The War Between the States

I am learning a lot about this time period.  I hope others are as well.  I made the following point yesterday, I believe.

"5.  The strong belief in States Rights is a double edged sword.  Due to fear that Richmond was abusing their power, some state governors did not lend constant support or money."

I found two specific individuals who support this point.

Governor Joseph Emerson Brown of Georgia often refered to Jefferson Davis as a tyrant.  Brown did not support the military draft.  He believed that the Confederate States of America over-stepped its power in requiring military support in other states.

Governor Zebulon Baird Vance of North Carolina was a major supporter of individual rights and local self-government.  He was often at odds with Davis.  He even kept his courts fully operational during the war.

    Interesting.

To be fair, this happened on both sides.

    The Four Centuries:

A historian wrote that if the South won, and this country stayed divided, one of two things would probably happen:

    1.  A foreign country would conquer this country in it's weak, divide, status.

    2. An internal person would seize dictatorship of this country in it's weak, divide, status.

    Daniel

My pastor stated that in the English civil war, the power was taken form the King (dictator) and given to the people. The government had been Rex Lex (the King is law) but became Lex Rex (the law is king). Then during the American Civil War, the system came full circle and we have been moving back to the “king” of complete government control (Rex Lex) since 1865. The foundation of inalienable God-given rights (states’ and individual) was lost. We are still on the downward slide resulting from this foundational transition. In the words of Bill Potter, the war between the states moved us from being referred to as the United States are to the United States is.

Lincoln did all sorts of terrible things that you won't hear about in most textbooks. I think the only thing good that I have to say about him is that he stuck with his wife against all odds. Boy, was she AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *Shivers*Smile

What source does that information come from?  I wonder if Lincoln actually had any personal connection with throwing people in jail (I am not doubting it occured), or was it like it is today with Bush.  Many things get put on the blame of the president because he is the representative of the nation.

Re: The War Between the States

Like he threw in jail francis Scott Keys, was it his grandson? For speaking for the south. Other Confederates, is what I stated above true? Just wanted to confirm, I am learning here.
"There are two things never to be lost sight of by a military commander. Always mystify, mislead, and surprise the enemy, if possible; and when you strike and overcome him, never give up the pursuit as long as your men have strength to follow; for an army routed, if hotly pursued, becomes panic-stricken, and can then be destroyed by half their number. The other rule is, never fight against heavy odds, if by any possible maneuvering you can hurl your own force on only a part, and that the weakest part, of your enemy and crush it. Such tactics will win every time, and a small army may thus destroy a large one in detail, and repeated victory will make it invincible." - Stonewall Jackson
