American Idol 8: Top 5 Night 1

American Idol got intense last night as the hopefuls sang Rat Pack standards, a difficult genre for so many different sounding singers.

Jamie Foxx was the surprise mentor for the top five Idols tonight. Interesting fact, Foxx is a classically trained singer.

Kris Allen sang “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra and Jamie liked how Kris acts like an artist and told him that he would work with him after Idol. Seemed like the girls were really into him and he was cute during his performance, too bad he’s married. Randy said that Kris did “his best performance to date.” Simon called the performance “wet” whatever that means.

The last girl left in the competition was up next, Allison Iraheta, singing “Someone to Watch Over Me” by Ella Fitzgerald. Jamie Foxx said that Allison was ahead of her time. It was great because she took a classical sounding song and still maintained her rockstar voice and sound. Kara said that she is no longer worried about Allison in this competition and said she “is not a one trick pony.”

Matt Giraud sang “My Funny Valentine” by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. Jamie Foxx said that if Matt pulled off this performance he might have this competition in the bag. It was a ridiculously sexy performance and you could feel the passion in it. Randy said it was a little pitchy daaawwwgggg. Paula loved it and felt the emotional connection in it.

Danny Gokey was next on stage singing “Come Rain or Come Shine” by Billie Holiday. Jamie got in his face to give Danny a more passionate feel, kind of weird but hey if it helps. Danny looked nice in a suit but I would’ve preferred to see his eyes while he sings. All together, it was a little boring. Simon liked Danny’s swagger and confidence in his performance.

Adam Lambert was last up singing “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone. Jamie Foxx said that he would blow the audience away. Guess what Jamie, you were right. Adam was AMAZING. He had a note at the end that was just crazy amazing. Randy said it was a little Broadway but thought that Adam is always in the zone. Simon said that he liked how obviously Adam wanted to win.

What a great night! Everyone brought it, but Adam is still in a class by himself.
