First November Dish Writing Contest!!

Published 10 November 08 09:15 AM | Zach

Hey all! I'm excited that it's election day and all but lets start our first Writing Month contest today!!! Here's the basics:

Ever hear of a Round Robin writing? Well, we're doing one! If you havent, What I'm going to do is post a sentence today. You will write the next line of the story. Then someone else writes the next line. And so forth.

Your line must be completely original and ties itself to the story! We are shooting for at least 1000 words to this story at the end. (Which if everyone has a 10 word sentence, thats 100 comments) There is no minimum to how long your post has to be as long as it is a complete sentence with a Subject and a Verb.

You cannot write more than one line in a row. If you do, the second line will be deleted (This gives everyone a fair chance)

How to win? After I post the final story, I will put every line in a hat and draw the winner. If you want, we could do this ON CAMERA during the next Fit Show. That's totally up to you all Smile

This contest will end: The contest will end on Tuesday, November 11th, or when we reach 1000 words. (So if we reach 1000 words before November 11th, the contest will not end)

The prize: I have a Borders Gift Card and a Barnes & Noble Gift Card. Winner gets to choose which one they want!

**If you have Questions: Do NOT hesitate to email me (zach@steeplemedia.com)! Try not to put them in this post, lets just try to make sure the story flows nicely Smile

Good Luck!!

Here's the Starting Line:

I found him on the doorstep...

I found him on the doorstep. By the looks of him he had been there for some time now. ...............................

# shawndiaz said on November 4, 2008 08:54 AM:

He looked hungry and cold, so I took him into my arms.

# Sandi said on November 4, 2008 12:52 PM:

His fur was soaking wet, so I took him inside to dry him off with a towel and see if I had anything I could feed him.

# fleur_de_lis said on November 4, 2008 02:15 PM:

As I was drying the wiggling, little ball of fluff off, I noticed there was a note tied around his neck.

# Zach said on November 4, 2008 02:16 PM:

***Dont forget, you can add a sentence AFTER someone else enters a sentence Smile There are NO limits to how many times you comment in a day, as long as someone comments in between your comments.

# shawndiaz said on November 4, 2008 02:39 PM:

The note said: "Please take care of my little darling, we love him so much and would like you to continue loving him" I cried tears of joy, and said I would.

# kaneohe said on November 4, 2008 03:14 PM:

I found something to feed him and put it in a bowl on the floor.

# Fluffy Cow said on November 4, 2008 06:37 PM:

Suddenly I realized, this beautiful, cuddly creature was NOT an ordinary housepet.... but a tiny little cow!!!

# scoutmom said on November 4, 2008 07:33 PM:

"A tiny little cow?  This changes EVERYTHING", I cried!

# Sandi said on November 5, 2008 01:23 PM:

No wonder it is not eating this dog food I set out....but wait, what are these odd symbols printed at the bottom of the note?

# shawndiaz said on November 5, 2008 04:16 PM:

As I went to look for a way to decipher the symbols, I came across something else that must have been sent with him. It was another letter!

# Sandi said on November 5, 2008 07:01 PM:

The second letter said "X marks the spot" and had some kind of map on it!

# JoJo31 said on November 5, 2008 10:23 PM:

After I finished looking at the map, my head turned to hear a loud ticking sound coming from the cow, he was moving really funny and then KAPOW..his head exploded leaving a bloody mess and the disturbing sound of a ringing cowbell in its wake.

# shawndiaz said on November 6, 2008 03:17 PM:

Then I realized I was a robotic cow, so it wasn't blood, it was hydraulic fluid!

# Sandi said on November 6, 2008 09:14 PM:

Amongst the blood / fluid gooey mess was something shiny......I washed it off and discovered it was a tiny silver key.

# fleur_de_lis said on November 6, 2008 09:27 PM:

Faintly inscribed on the back of the key were a series of strange looking symbols.

# Sandi said on November 6, 2008 10:35 PM:

Hmmmmm I have seen these symbols somewhere before..but where?

# fleur_de_lis said on November 6, 2008 11:25 PM:

Quickly I ran to the end table and grabbed the note that had been tied around the poor creature's neck.

# Sandi said on November 7, 2008 09:33 AM:

Yes, there were some matching symbols on both the note and the key - and suddenly I recalled where I had seen them before!

# scoutmom said on November 7, 2008 10:29 AM:

Of course!  It was a variation on the Dancing Man cipher - this was the Exploding Cow cipher. I now realized the importance of the hydraulic fluid spatter in decoding this important message...

D....R....I....N....

# Fluffy Cow said on November 7, 2008 01:37 PM:

K...Y...O...U...R...O....V....A....L...T....I...N...E....

WHAT COULD IT MEAN?!?!?!?

# hentyfan said on November 7, 2008 02:41 PM:

made... in... china... oh, no, oops, wrong side.

# j15bell said on November 7, 2008 04:23 PM:

As I was concentrating on deciphering the message I was unconsciously shaking the key in my other hand and could hear a faint sound, ***, chachink.

# Zach said on November 7, 2008 04:36 PM:

Go ahead and type in the word thats bleeped out with a space between the letters... I'll know what you mean :)

# Sandi said on November 7, 2008 05:50 PM:

"Dah dah dah we are the itsy bitsy teeny weeny choco malted ovateenies..." How curious...

# fleur_de_lis said on November 7, 2008 10:47 PM:

From the ruins of the exploded cow/robot, a faint light began to pulse in time with the tune.

# hentyfan said on November 8, 2008 08:57 AM:

What now? I muttered. I had a very bad feeling that I was about to find out.

# Sandi said on November 8, 2008 10:20 AM:

The light was forming a shape on my white wall - again it was from the exploding cow cipher!

S...W...I...S...S...M...I...S...S...hmmm, we seem to have a theme going on here, I think I better consult my pal Norma Nestle, and find my maps of Switzerland.

# hentyfan said on November 10, 2008 06:01 PM:

Hey, Norma?  I gotta favor to ask. I know its been a while...

# Sandi said on November 10, 2008 08:30 PM:

"I think I know EXACTLY where to begin looking!" Norma exclaimed.

# Fluffy Cow said on November 12, 2008 12:12 PM:

Within hours, I found myself sitting next to Norma on a flight to Switzerland.  She was sleeping in her seat with her iPod turned to some nature sounds.  I, on the other hand, decided to spend my time pouring over the clues and maps we had acquired so far.  The steady drone of the planes engines pervaded my senses as the tiny overhead light provided little help in my search.  Leaning back in my stiff chair, I picked up the cup of stale airline coffee that sat on the miniscule tray.  What was I missing?  Sipping the tepid liquid, I closed my eyes for a moment to replay the fluid spatters again in my mind.  The plane dipped slightly and shifted, causing the coffee to splash onto the map.  Man... this was not my day.  Setting it down again I reached for a napkin to clean up the drops.  Before I wiped, however, I saw something that caught my eye... one of the drops had landed precisely on Verbier.  Suddenly, it all made sense!  "Jinkies!" I cried.

# Sandi said on November 12, 2008 07:38 PM:

"That's where we are headed as soon as land!" I shrieked, jolting Norma from her snooze.

# fleur_de_lis said on November 13, 2008 12:03 PM:

"Eh, what?", Norma said looking at me with bleary eyes. The Toblerone conference in Verbier, Switzerland, I shrieked, waving my map in front of her face.

# Sandi said on November 14, 2008 12:00 PM:

"Brilliant!" shrieked Norma, and the next thing we knew we were driving on the correct.....I mean RIGHT side of the road towards the conference. "I sure hope this little treasure hunt of yours is worthwhile," said Norma, "because you sure are investing a lot of money in this hunch so far!"

(Can this be bumped or something? What's the word count anyway?)
