Week 2 Elimination Post
28 February 08 09:26 PM | soccer ref | with no comments

Still me, soccer_ref, filling in for Zach. Tonight is the dreaded Elimination night! Tonight, we say goodbye to another 2 guys and another 2 girls.

After the usual introduction of the judges, we get right down to business. First things first. All 20 contestants are on the stage sinning a medley of 70's songs...first just the boys, then just the girl, then everyone together.  As a whole it was a nice performance, but for me, it highlighted some of the weaker singers in the group. I felt it put up a big red flag for a few of them that said, "Look how much better the rest are when we sing side by side." Ouch.

Guys on the bench. Back row stands. Ryan seats them one by one until just Jason Yeager and Danny Noriega are left standing. It's obvious from the look on Danny's face that he was waaaay overconfident this week and never expected to be in the bottom 3.  But Danny's safe another week as we say goodbye to Jason Yeager.

Girls are up! Again the back row stands, then sits until we're left with Amanda Overmyer and  Alexandrea Lushington. Amanda looks a bit shocked. Alexandrea looks resigned to what may happen. And it IS Alexandrea who is out. Ryan has her come to the middle of the stage and reaches out to put his hand on her arm in a comforting gesture and, WOW!, she pulls away from him!!!  Yikes!  While she's singing they cut away to a shot of little David Archuletta crying. And when she's done, she goes over to him to hug him. In somewhat of an apologetic move, Ryan asks her for a big hug and she gives him one.

Back again and we're still on the girls. Alaina Whitaker and Kady Malloy are called to center stage. Honestly, without their hair and makeup and wardrobe from last night, I can barely tell which is which. Alaina is out and she is so distraught she says she can't sing. So Ryan gives her the choice and the other girls come out and help her. During her song we cut away again to a shot of Danny Noriega crying.

After the break we get to hear the big Idol News that Ryan's been talking about. Turns out that American Idol has been trying to get the rights to use the Lennon/McCarthy songbook for 6 years and Sony has finally given permission. The 12 finalists will be on the stage with songs from that songbook on March 12th.  Also, Ryan announces the return of Idol Gives Back, which will air on Wed, April 9th. We got to see a recap of last year's show. Then it's away to another break.

Ok, back now for the last elimination of the night. The guys are on the couch again.  Luke Menard and Robbie Carrico are called to center stage. And Robbie is out. No big surprise there. He was one of the weaker performers this week.

And finally, we get to see the Goodbye video for the 4 who leave us tonight!

Well...we have to wait till next week to see who goes next. Who do YOU think it will be??

Thanks for having me as your guest blogger this week. It's been a blast. Keep watching! This is Ref....Out!

Week 2 The 70's and the AI girls ...
27 February 08 09:26 AM | soccer ref | 2 comment(s)
Wednesday, February 27, 2008 11:01 PM soccer ref [Edit]

Hi! This is soccer_ref again. I'm guest blogging for Zach all this week.

It's 70's night.  Tonight the remaining 10 girls perform. Last week's results weren't terribly surprising. With such a good group of performers, one error could be their last.  How will the rest fare this week? Let's watch and find out.

The performances are listed in order, so if you are up and reading this before 12:00 AM EST tonight, you can still call in to vote for your favorite(s)! Remember the number is 1-866-IDOLS- followed by the contestants 2 digit number for this week. (Or 1-866-43657-and their 2 digit number).  If you have a AT&T Wireless, you can text the word VOTE to 57 plus their 2 digit number.

As an added plus, we get to learn one thing that America doesn't know about each contestant.

01.  Carly Smithson sang Crazy on You by Heart.

What America doesn't know about her: She and her husband own a tatoo parlor, but she also works in an Irish bar.

Good lead-off to the night. She had a couple of minor problems, but all in all it was a solid performance. One of the top performances of the evening.

02.  Syesha Mercado sang Me and Mrs Jones by Billy Paul.

What America doesn't know about her: She's done a lot of commercials, and she can imitate a baby's cry.

Well, this was a man's song. She did a decent job with it, but there was no wow factor. Coulda seen that performance in any nightclub anywhere. She's got stage presence and a good voice, but is that enough?

03.  Brooke White sang You're So Vain by Carly Simon.

What America doesn't know about her: She went to beauty school.

Well, she didn't stretch the song much to make it her own, but with the tempo change and a few minor changes, the song was fresh and didn't feel dated. I really enjoyed it. She's one to keep your eye on. I predict she'll be in the top 10, probably even longer than that.

04.  Ramiele Malubay sang Don't Leave Me This Way by Thelma Houston.

What America doesn't know about her: She used to do Polynesian dance when she was young.

This song did not show off her voice. The low notes were too low and it just went nowhere.  I was bored.  She has one of the better voices of the girls, but that song didn't do her any favors.

05.  Kristy Lee Cook sang You're No Good by Linda Ronstadt.

What America doesn't know about her: She's a tomboy.

The song was OK. Just OK. She didn't really make it her own. But she looked rather mechanical up on the stage, as though she was thinking about every move, every look, every camera angle. It was distracting, and the whole performance was rather lackluster for me.

06.  Amanda Overmyer sang Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas.

What America doesn't know about her: She loves to read.

This was absolutely awful in every respect. She was all over the place on the low notes and the highest notes. What did she do to her hair??? And those pants!!!  OMG!  Whoever did her hair and wardrobe should be fired. She looked freaky and sounded terrible. I wouldn't be suprised if she gets sent home.

07.  Alaina Whitaker sang Hopelessly Devoted to You by Olivia Newton-John.  .

What America doesn't know about her: She can't stand to have the foods on her plate touch each other .

Well, it was a decent rendition. Nothing wrong with it.  But then, there was nothing special about it. She's 17 and looked like about 22 or 23. She wore a pretty dress and had her hair done nicely, but the look was all so...prom or pageant.  Still, it may have earned her a spot in next week's lineup.

 08.  Alexandrea Lushington sang If You Leave Me Now by Chicago.

What America doesn't know about her: She was the poster child for the Atlanta Fire Department, and sang at Ground Zero.

Once again, a lackluster performance. This song did her no favors. And she seemed to give off a defeatist attitude during the critique, which doesn't bode well. Has she given up?  As far as her outfit....the top was nice, the shoes/boots were nice, but what was she thinking with those shorts??!!??  She looked like she had sacks of flour strapped onto her thighs and knees. Perhaps the mirror wasn't floor-length? Yikes!

09.  Kady Malloy sang Magic Man by Heart.

What America doesn't know about her: She sings opera.

Well, it wasn't the worst performance of the evening, nor was it the best. Nothing to write home about. Forgettable. But this girl should be singing country. She suited to it. She'll be back next week. Count on it.

10.  Asia’h Epperson sang All By Myself by Eric Carmen.

What America doesn't know about her: She was a cheerleader in middle school and high school.

I personally didn't like this performance. The song was just too big for her. She could make the notes, but it sounded like she was screaming instead of singing.  The whole performance seemed contrived. And I need to say something here about her makeup and wardrobe. Maybe it was just me...but I thought she looked like a hooker. Doesn't anyone take a critical eye to these things before the contestants go on stage???

OK, well, for the most part a rather forgettable night for the girls. There are 1 or 2 who stood out, but the rest of them are going to have to pick better songs and really bring the enthusiasm and originality, or they'll find themselvesmaking an early exit.

See ya tomorrow night for the live elimination show!

Week 2 The 70's and the AI guys ...
26 February 08 11:01 PM | soccer ref | 2 comment(s)

Hi! This is soccer_ref.  I'm guest blogging for Zach this week. (Hope I do ok.)

It's 70's night.  Tonight the remaining 10 guys perform. I wasn't surprised to see who left last Thursday.

01.  Michael Johns sang Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac.

What America doesn't know about him: He's very into sports and tennis.

I was disappointed. No wow factor here. It was good, but it wasn't great. Unless nobody steps up the game, he's safe for this week.

02.  Jason Castro sang I Just Want to Be Your Everything by Andy Gibb.

What America doesn't know about him: He hates interviews.

Again, nice, but no wow. This could have been his moment to shine if he'd turned it into a Reggae beat. It was so close to being that, yet so far away. I still like him, but the song left me flat.

03.  Luke Menard sang Killer Queen by Queen.

What America doesn't know about him: He toured as part of an a cappella group.

He did a fabulous job on the song. I'm just afraid that the younger generation won't "get" it.  When Queen did the song, you had an established superstar singing a difficult song. Now you've got a relatively unknown singer giving it a try. It's risky to say the least. Well, at least he didn't let the song get the better of him.

04.  Robbie Carrico sang Hot Blooded by Foreigner.

What America doesn't know about him: He's a drag racer.

He did a good job on the song. Wasn't blown away, but it wasn't karaoke either. He's here for a few more weeks anyway.

05.  Danny Noriega sang Superstar by The Carpenters.

What America doesn't know about him: He was in a punk rock band.

This was, in my opinion, a disaster. He was bordering on flat on all the lower notes. And his flippant attitude has me wanting to wipe the floor with him! This was not a good choice of song, nor a good performance.

06.  David Hernandez sang Papa Was a Rolling Stone by The Temptations.

What America doesn't know about him: He competed in gymnastics when he was little.

OK!!! This was the first truly good performance we've seen tonight.  I have to admit, I have never liked that song, but I loved his rendition of it!!! He's gonna be around for the top 10 for sure.

07.  Jason Yeager sang Long Train Running by The Doobie Brothers.

What America doesn't know about him: He plays multiple instruments, including piano and drum.

It was OK. Nothing special here. A bit of a changeup from last week. Showed a different side of him. But nothing to write home about. I think he's in danger of elimination this week.

08.  Chikezie sang I Believe to My Soul by Donny Hathaway.

What America doesn't know about him: His name is Nigerian and is properly pronounced Chi-kay-zay.

He did a good job with the song. Really made it his own. He'll be here for another week. I did, however, take exception to his clothing tonight. I found it distracting that he was singing a Motown song, but was dressed in preppy clothes. The juxtaposition didn't work for me.

09. David Cook sang All Right Now by Free.

What America doesn't know about him: He's a "word nerd". (He likes crossword puzzles.)

His performance was great! He knows how to own the stage. His biggest problem is...he's forgettable.

10.  David Archuleta sang Imagine by John Lennon.

What America doesn't know about him: He met the Season 1 finalists and sang for them.

OMG!!! He could record this song right now!!! I was worried when he started. To take on such a big song that everyone knows so well meant that he would be compared to the original. But his version was so different from the original. It was fresh. It was new. I liked it better than the original. And he sings with his entire being! This is the one to beat in this competition. I think we have seen who the eventual winner will be right here, right now.

OK, so, not a bad night for the guys. There are 4 or 5 would I would say are tied for next to last place. And only 1 or 2 who I would say are ready to move on to the finals. Let's step it up a bit next week, guys!

I'll be here tomorrow to see the girls bring it.

LIVE Elimination Post
21 February 08 08:00 PM | Zach | 1 comment(s)

Yes thats right! I will be blogging about the show LIVE on Elimination nights!

So, tonight, we say goodbye to 2 guys and 2 girls. Ryan starts off talking about how different opinions that Randy and Simon have. Ryan called Simon Old Man. Next, Ryan showed us an AWESOME real of the contestants at a photo shoot (with Daughtry playing in the background)

Next we got to see the WHOLE top 24 on stage singing! They are good as a group!  In the middle of the song, we couldnt see anything for about 2 minutes, then it cut off so I dont know if they said anything until after the break... (Usually they dont say anything after singing, they just cut to commercial)

Time to get "Down to business" Here's what happened. Garret goes to center stage. and he is out of the competition. I thought that was kinda fast to kick someone out! A couple of people were scared at how Ryan did it. Well, he needed to go anyway.

Girls are up! Who will go first? Kristie was called to center stage. she is told she is safe. The person leaving tonight is Amy Davis. Looking back, she wasnt that good anyway so it was definitly her time. Her song tonight was worse than her song the other day.

After the break, we get to see what "Mama Abdul gave her to shake." Which means she is going to be singing her new single!!

Ok, they just showed the video but the song is AWESOME!!!

Another lady result from the Girls. Joanne and Amanda are called center stage.. Everyone on the sofa is safe, My guess is Joanne will be the one to leave but, you know Ryan and suspense, we'll be waiting til after the break.  Who called it? Joanne is out Amanda safe. It was definitly noticable that she was going to go when they were showing the video at the begining of last nights performances. There were many better ones than Joannes.

And last (and maybe least?) Chikeze and Colton to the center stage. Colton is OUT Chikeze is Safe. And finally, we get to see the Goodbye video!

This is TheDisher, signing off! Disher out!

Posting next week will be possibly different, I'll give you more details later.

The guys may have brought it, the girls, not so much

Ok, this post is a bit repitive from yesterdays, I just changed a few things and entered my input. I was in a hurry (It's not easy fitting in 2 hrs of Idol every week...) Plus I have yet to put in the songs that they sang.

Well, we made it! Today we meet the first half of the top 24! Man I wish I could have some popcorn…. Lol Its going to be good! Get prepared!! Below you will find my rating about each Idol singer. Tonight is the top 12 girls.

I have decided that this season I will watch the show and judge without the input of the judges. I mute them while I type my results. Then I replayed the results during breaks and said who I agreed with. Honestly!! These performances are in order so if you are still up until 12:00 PM EST tonight, you can still call in! Remember the number is 1-866-IDOLS(43657)-(their two digits eg. 01 or 12) OR if you have a AT&T Wireless phone, you can text the word VOTE to 57(their two digits). ((OK now I really feel like Ryan))

01. Kristy Lee Cook sang Song by Artist.

How I think they did: Wasn’t her best performance. Very mediocre, not a good song for her (stupid phone rang!)

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

02. Joanne Borgella sang Song by Artist.

How I think they did: I have to give her great rating because that’s my Grandma’s absolute favorite song. But it wasn’t my favorite rendition of the song.

I agree with Paula on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

03. Alaina Whitaker sang Song by Artist.

How I think they did: It was a little iffy at the beginning but WOW, that rocked! Its like Randy said, it’s the “year of the young.”

I agree with Randy on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

04. Amanda Overmyer sang Song by Artist.

How I think they did: I can honestly say that I didn’t like it. It wasn’t the best vocally but was a great performance.

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

05. Amy Davis sang Song by Artist.

How I think they did: It was bad.  I started doing other work, heck, I started doing jumping jacks lol.

08. Kady Malloy sang Song by Artist.

How I think they did: Wasn’t the best… Probably one of the worst tonight.

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

09. Asia’h Epperson sang Song by Artist.

How I think they did: It was by far the best of the night so far. She let it all out, did her own. She will go far

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

10. Ramiele Malubay sang Song by Artist.

How I think they did: It was good but not my fav. I understand tho that she was probably the best thus far.

01. David Hernandez sang In the Midnight Hour.

How I think they did: He did a great job with the song. Had some definite pitch problems but for being the first person up, he did great! He needed to move around a bit.

I agree with Randy and Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

02. Chikeze Eze sang More Today Than Yesterday.

How I think they did: It was just OK for me. I thought it was pitchy towards the beginning.  I really like his personality (because he fought back against Simon)

I agree with, more or less Simon, on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

03. David Cook sang Happy Together by The Turtles.

How I think they did: It started out weird, I couldn’t really pick out what song it was, but once he got into it, it ROCKED! Best performance of the night so far.

I agree with Randy on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

04. Jason Yeager sang Moon River.

How I think they did:  There were some pitch problems… I couldn’t really figure out what song he was singing… It was actually kind of weird because I lost track of what he was saying half way thru the song. I’m going to use Simon’s F word… FORGETTIBLE

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

05. Robbie Carrico sang One by Three Dog Night.

How I think they did: It was really good, but I don’t think he’ll be able to sing anything else. He may make it to the top 12 but he’ll turn out like Daughtry. He says he can sing anything but time will tell.

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

06. David Archuleta sang Shop Around by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles.

How I think they did: Wow. I couldn’t believe how AMAZING that was. DEFINITLY will make it to the top 12.

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

08. Luke Menard sang Everybody’s Talking.

How I think they did: Not my favorite, very pitchy. Especially right at the end. It didn’t work for me.

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

09. Colton Berry sang Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley.

How I think they did: it was OK, not as bad as some of the others. Wasn’t on the top of his game.

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

How I think they did: It was a great song but it was BORING.

I agree with Simon on replay.

My Order (This week: -) (Last week: -)

Tune in tonight at 8 PM EST for coverage of the Idol action! I hope to have a post up after the show!

Also, I wanted to apoligize to the "Celeb dirt" fans as I havent had time to cover that subject. If one of my bloggers would like to figure out how to split that up, that would be awesome, blogging about 2 different reality TV shows takes time (and doing Fit club again... uggg no time!!) (not that I'm complaining...) (Ok, maybe a little) (no, no complaining!)

Big Brother: 'Til Death Do You Part Episodes 1 and 2
14 February 08 10:00 AM | Zach | 2 comment(s)

On Tuesday, we met the 16 Houseguests that are hoping for that $500,000 prize! They were told that they would be playing in pairs with "soul mates" that Big Brother picked for them. Jen and Ryan were a couple from Ohio and they planned on playing the game as if they didnt know each other. Once they heard that they would be playing in couples, they thought they would be togther. Well, thats not the case! Big Brother split them up to try and be with other people. In last nights episode, we found out that Ryan doesnt trust Parker (Jen's Partner), Parker doesnt trust Ryan, Jen doesnt trust Allison (Ryan's Partner) and Allison doesnt trust Jen. One big happy family! Ryan and Jen also told their partners that they were dating which was a stupid idea.

Right at the start of the first episode, after the getting to know each other part, Big Brother announced the first "Power Couple" competition. This Power Couple would have the capibility to evict any chosen pair. Parker and Jen won the power and chose to evict (we found this out last night) Sharon and Jacob. They were both on my "Suspicious list" along with Adam and Shelia. After looking at my "pre-show analysis" which has absolutly no influence on the game whatsoever, I had Adam and Shelia picked to go first.

So, drama? you betcha!! It started right when they all walked in the door. I dont know how those ladys did it but they pretty much figured out the twist within the first 5 minutes of being there. They were all single! So, they were pared up and most seemed to get along from the getgo. Then there was Adam and Shelia. First off, Adam is about the ugliest person to ever enter the house, he lookes like a pig, he snores and called his Soul Mate "Ma" just because she was about 2 times his age...

After the eviction of Sharon and Jacob, The houseguests competed in the HoH competition! We had a Big Brother celebrity appearence which was AWESOME! Eric and Jess from BB8 were there! Eric seemed like he knew how to host competitions! (Mostly because he hosted just about all of them from last year). In the end our "A" Team won! Amanda and Alex.

==========
-----Spoiler-----
==========

On a side note, as of last night, Niel (Joshuah's Partner) walked, as in he left the show. And his replacement was Sharon (who was evicted a few days earlier). I guess more will be announced on the Sunday show. We aren't really sure whats going on. I guess since Josh doesnt have a parther, Sharon is now his partner (wouldn't that be kinda weird?)

Also, Ryan and Allison, and Jen and Parker were nominated for eviction! (coulda saw that one coming) I guess Ryan is campaigning against Jen... lol. However, earlier, Jen basically told Ryan she wanted him gone? IDK, its weird... I'll let ya know!!

American Idol Hollywood week!!!
12 February 08 08:01 PM | Zach | 1 comment(s)

The TV station is having major troubles keeping their station feeding, so I may not be a useful source tonight...

What we know is that they are not going to eliminate anyone for the first 2 days.

As I said, I hear  MAJOR pitch problems but thats the stations fault. I've noticed a general trend, most of the instrument players really stunk. But the vocalists who didnt use instruments were much better.

This week is probably going to be bad for the blog lol, It is hard to write everything down about the show and tell you about it. I will try to find some expert opinions about it...

BB9 UPDATE!!!
04 February 08 09:25 AM | Zach | 3 comment(s)

Got a few things for the first Big Brother Winter Season!

First off, it was announced that there will be SIXTEEN Houseguests instead of the planned 14!

Julie Chen (aka Julie Chicken) is going to announce the top 16 WEDNESDAY Morning on the Early Show! The show airs from 7-9 AM EST so set that DVR! Hopefully there will be a YouTube vid if it afterwards because then I can post it here for you.

Also, this year The Dish is going to hold a contest so see who can closely guess the eliminations game! We will hold for the overall game, also will hold one weekly. The overall one will be a bracket one. You pick which person will be eliminated each week. The weekly contest will be picking the person to be kicked out and by how many votes they will lose. More details to come!!

The other BB things I've heard are... There will be a BRAND NEW BB9 house! Janielle is going to have a bigger role in this years competition (I'm kinda getting sick of her...) We will find out more about the House today...

ALSO! If you want to try and make a banner for the BB9 show to be displayed on The Dish, send them to zach@steeplemedia.com and you will win a prize!!
