High Roller Wednesdays Rules
31 October 07 05:40 PM | Zach | 3 comment(s)

Alright, get ready for High Roller Wednesdays!!! Sandi and I have worked our butts off getting everything ready for today. However, we couldn't work our butts fast enough and had to push it back another week or so. All you get today is a nice teaser as to what you should expect for the start of the contest. We didn't want you to think this was going to end up like National Treasure hunt II did... Also, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments! I tried to be as thorough in the rules as possible but sometimes its not good enough.

High Roller Wednesday Official Rules

High Roller Wednesdays is a new contest at SteepleMedia.com. It will take place on the Entertainment blog (The Dish) and the games blog (Winners Circle). The two blogs will host this game and it will only be about those two blogs. Each contestant will answer a number of questions and possibly win fantastic prizes.

Eligibility

Contestants must be twelve (12) or older to play. Only one entry per person. If a contestant enters more than once, the first entry will be accepted.

How to play

Read the entertainment blog (The Dish) and the games blog (Winners Circle) during the two (2) weeks prior to the contest. Then on Wednesday, a series of one (1) to five (5) questions will be posted on both blogs at 12:00 PM EST (NOON). The contestants have from 12:00 PM EST until 6:00 PM EST to submit their answers. To enter, simply answer the questions in an email addressed to either sandi@steeplemedia.net or zach@steeplemedia.com.  Please, in the subject line, have it say something like “High Roller Wednesdays” so that we do not think that the email is a spam message. PLEASE NOTE: If a contestant posts answers in the comments (either correct or incorrect) the questions will be thrown out and a new set will replace them. In addition to that, the contestant who posted the answers will not be allowed to answer the new questions.

How to win

After 6:00 PM EST, Sandi and Zach will look through all the entries. The entry with the most correct answers will win a prize. In the event of a tie, the contestant who submitted earlier will win the prize. (Spectators will look first at hour, then minute, then second. If there is still a tie, the contestants will be asked another question. First contestant to answer it will win.)

What you win

The contestant that wins High Roller Wednesdays will be named the champion for a week. As a champion, the contestant will have the option of taking the prize or risking it for another week. The champion can be named “champion” for fifteen (15) weeks in a row. The contestant who is named champion cannot lose during his streak. In the event that he does lose during his streak, he will lose any and all rankings in the “champion chart”. Each stage, the prize is more and more expensive increasing from $2 to $150.

Survivor China Episode 6: That's Love, Baby! It Makes you Strong!
30 October 07 02:43 PM | webyongzy | 2 comment(s)

The sun comes out after the storm. This is also true for Survivor. After one of the worst episodes, came one of the best episodes yet. In a tense tribal council, another Survivor's fire is extinguished and is sent packing.

It's day 16, and the search for the Hidden Immunity Idol is heating up. Todd tells Amanda about the Hidden Immunity Idol and his plan to kidnap James after winning the reward challenge, such that James can pass the next clue over to him.

The reward challenge is to run into an old dilapidated house and untie puzzle pieces. Once all 8 are untied, tribes must use them to form a phrase spoken by Confucius. The reward is the chance to go to a teahouse and have tea, snacks and a bath and lots and lots of CHARMIN ULTRA-STRONG toilet paper (product placement). Fei Long got off to an early start and kept it as they successfully revealed the phrase "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". They kidnap James over and all head to a teahouse coincidentally named CHARMIN teahouse (MAJOR PRODUCT PLACEMENT!!!) to grab some snacks and have a bath. Amanda, Denise and Courtney complain about Jean-Robert being disgusting and James shows off his fit body during his shower. Todd hatched his plan and tells James to give him the clue, and he will save his life. Back at the Fei Long camp, James gives Todd the clue and Todd figures out that the hidden immunity idol is the medallion on the paifang. In the worst way to get an idol EVER, they try to grab the idol in broad daylight IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY. Too late, Frosti tries to help them and accidentally pulls the idol off the paifang! However, the other tribesmates, amazingly, are not suspicious of this mysterious turn of events, and Frosti solidified his position in Fei Long.

Todd hatches a devious plan, and gives the idol to James, telling him to throw the challenge, and vote off Jaime. However, at Zhan Hu, Jaime, Erik and Peih-Gee regret their decision to throw the challenge last episode and they resolve to win the next immunity challenge.

Unfortunately for James, the next immunity challenge is an eating competition. The tribe to eat 5 traditional Chinese dishes fastest wins. The first dish is Chicken Heart, and Frosti wins. Next up are baby turtles among others, and Zhan Hu catches up. Denise could not swallow the chicken foetuses, despite James' efforts to throw the challenge. Erik wins the challenge for Zhan Hu by swallowing the 1000-year-old egg faster than Frosti. Todd realises that his whole plan became screwed up in an instant.

Back at Fei Long, Amanda, Todd and Denise tries to convince Frosti and Courtney to vote out Sharea, but Courtney wants to vote out Jean-Robert, and Frosti has doubts voting off his Zhan Hu tribemate.

At Tribal Council, Frosti finally votes for Sharea, but Courtney still votes for Jean-Robert. I think that Courtney is the worst contestant ever, with all her illogical moves:

"Jean-Robert's Disgusting!"

"I don't strategise!"

"I'm a blonde! I can't think!"

Anyway, Sharea was voted out 5-2 and Courtney just slipped from my "Hot Favourites" list. Good Job Courtney. You are playing SUCH a strategic game.

SoCal Fires Update 3
26 October 07 07:35 AM | Zach | 1 comment(s)

 Courtesy of CNN.com

SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- Favorable weather and firefighter reinforcements have helped ease the fire danger in parts of Southern California, but the human toll from the disaster was still coming to light.

The number of deaths attributed directly to the fires grew to seven Thursday, after the charred bodies of four people believed to be illegal immigrants were found in a canyon east of San Diego.

Seven other deaths are labeled as fire-related: Three elderly people died during evacuations, and four others died after being evacuated.

Improving conditions allowed more people to come home Thursday, but new evacuations were ordered in areas where the unrelenting flames marched on.

Where residents could return, they often found ash and rubble in place of their homes.

"We see pictures from online and on TV, but it's just, it's much different when you see it up front," said Louela Binlac in front of what remained of her Rancho Bernardo home.

"The most important thing is that our family is still together, everybody is safe, and eventually we will rebuild again," she said. "Those things you can replace. We are just all grateful that everybody is safe."

Rancho Bernardo resident Marilyn Wood said it was "really scary" to come back to the pile of ashes she once called home. Her voice breaking, Wood vowed to rebuild and recounted how she and her husband, Gordon, fled early Monday with only minutes to spare.

"[Our house] was burning as we were leaving," she said.

President Bush got a firsthand look at the aftermath of the devastating fires Thursday -- 10 still burning across seven counties.

He promised federal help for those affected by the wildfires.

"We're not going to forget you in Washington, D.C.," the president said after touring the area by air and visiting Rancho Bernardo with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Bush signed a federal disaster declaration Wednesday, freeing money to help residents rent temporary homes and repair damaged homes and businesses and to help local and state agencies pay for the emergency response.

The cost of homes destroyed by the wildfires is likely to top $1 billion in San Diego County alone, an emergency official said.

People left homeless by the fires can apply online for federal help at FEMA.gov, said David Paulison, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Almost 9,000 firefighters battled the blazes, augmented by reinforcements from dozens of states across the country.

Twenty-three fires have scorched 472,478 acres (738 square miles), an area roughly three-quarters of the size of Rhode Island. See where the fires are still burning »

Along with homes and businesses, the flames have destroyed roughly one-third of San Diego County's lucrative avocado crop, along with other croplands, greenhouses and nurseries.

A change in the winds -- from a ferocious 100 mph on Sunday to an almost manageable 10 mph on Thursday -- brought welcome relief and allowed a full-bore aerial assault on the fires.

Reinforcements from across the country arrived to aid the exhausted firefighters, officials said.

While the fires still threatened some 25,000 homes, the burn rate in the region -- a measure made up of factors like wind speed, humidity and available fuel -- was significantly lower Thursday, a spokeswoman at the California Department of Forestry and Protection said.

Residents of several communities, including the city of San Diego, were allowed to return home Wednesday and Thursday, but more evacuations were ordered -- the latest covering the communities of Lake Henshaw and Mesa Grande and the La Jolla Indian Reservation in San Diego County.

With the shifting fires, some shelters closed as others opened closer to danger.

In San Diego, Mayor Jerry Sanders announced that Qualcomm Stadium -- the home of NFL's Chargers that held 11,000 evacuees at the height of the fires but dropped to 750 Wednesday night -- would close to evacuees.

"As we transition from a large-scale emergency evacuation center into the recovery process, we have begun assisting all evacuees to find more suitable shelter and housing," Sanders said.

"Toward that end, Qualcomm will close as an emergency shelter at noon [Friday]."

Meanwhile, arson investigations were under way in Orange and Riverside counties in connection with some of the wildfires.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department announced a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the 23,000-acre Santiago fire, local officials said.

"For someone to even think about doing something as reprehensible as starting a fire, where they knew that the fire would grow as rapidly as it would, traveling about three, 3½ miles in about an hour, is just, is really absolutely unconscionable," Orange County Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion told CNN.

The Santiago fire was deliberately started by someone with apparent knowledge of arson, said Orange County Fire Chief Chip Prather, who added that evidence was found at the scene where the fire started.

The FBI and the ATF are assisting Orange County authorities with the investigation.

In addition, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection considers the Rosa fire in Riverside County an arson case. That fire burned more than 400 acres before being fully contained.

In other arson investigations, two men have been arrested in San Bernardino County, one in San Fernando and an adult and a juvenile in San Diego County. None are believed connected with the major fires burning in the area.

Here are the answers to the Qu'est-ce que c'est! Note: For some STUPID reason, its not letting me post images from my new host! This is driving me nuts! I will give you links to everything below though..

UPDATE: The way to solve for the word: First off, those of you who are currently working on and tried the z-toc.com puzzle had an edge. That goes the same as for people who participated in puzzles like Ultimate Riddle, p4x the riddle, Not Pron, etc. What you do is save the pictures, and open them up in a program that reads a pictures exif. The exif is hidden information inside the picture file. If I post any pictures in the future (besides of celebrities)  make sure to check and see if there is anything in the exif. If there is something, do what it says and you may earn a prize Smile By the way, the word was "credit" and I am accepting scoutmom's answer because a) she was first and b) I didnt clearly state at first where to put the word. Congrats scout! You also get to pick a number this week!

Another by the way.... Do NOT pick 4, 29, 42, or 22.

SoCal Update 2
25 October 07 12:15 PM | Zach | with no comments

(CNN) -- After four days on the fire lines, they are hot, exhausted, dirty, thirsty and spread way too thin for their own comfort.

But the nearly 8,900 firefighters battling 18 blazes in Southern California got a slight break on Wednesday as the humidity rose slightly and the Santa Ana winds shifted and died down a bit.

The relentless westward march of the most devastating Witch and Harris fires in San Diego County halted as the wind began blowing inland from the Pacific Ocean. Some evacuated neighborhoods in San Diego reopened, state fire officials said.

But the change also meant the firefighters had to quickly shift their resources and focus in the battle against three major fires, including a "very precarious" threat to power lines that connect San Diego to the nation's electrical grid.

In Los Angeles County, firefighters gained ground, containing three major fires.

Wildfires from San Diego to San Bernardino to Santa Barbara have burned at least 679 square miles and destroyed nearly 1,600 structures, officials said. Another 2,800 are threatened. Despite the scope of the wildfires, only one fire-related death and 70 injuries, including 34 firefighters, have been reported.

Among the injured firefighters was Linda Lewis' daughter, whose face was burned so severely she was initially thought to be dead.

"Her first response to me was 'I'm sorry,' " Lewis told CNN at University of California-San Diego Medical Center's burn unit.

"She told me that she was in the truck when the fire overtook them and then had to get out of the truck," the worried mother continued. "So that's how with all their protective gear everything was covered, but her face was exposed somewhat; and so that's why she was burned there."

Her doctors said chances are good she will heal, and may even fight fires again.

Every fire agency in California has been called up, said Linda Avery, a spokeswoman with the state Office of Emergency Services in Sacramento. They include 145 state fire engines, 25 local engines, and 26 bulldozers. As the Santa Ana winds die down, additional support is being provided from the air.

Fifteen hundred members of the California National Guard have been called up to provide security and help with evacuations. About 350 of them were in the fire zones of San Diego County on Wednesday, the OES said.

Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona also sent crews to help. According to the OES, Nevada sent five strike teams of 17 firefighters each, 25 engines and 100 firefighters. Arizona sent seven strike teams, 35 engines and 140 firefighters. New Mexico sent three strike teams, 15 engines, 60 firefighters.

Firefighters usually work 12-hour shifts at wildfires, but that can stretch to 24 hours in an emergency. They're on the fire lines for as many as 21 days straight without a day off. Sometimes they eat in chow lines, sometimes they are brought bag lunches. When the flames lead them deep in the back country, they have to settle for MREs.

Some keep in touch with loved ones during short breaks. Firefighter Tom Zeulner, a battalion chief from San Luis Obispo exchanged text messages with his son, Derick, who shared them with CNN with his father's permission.

Early Monday morning, the father said by text message that he was at the Ranch fire in Ventura County. "Love you dad and praying for you and your men," son Derick wrote back.

Tuesday night, son Derick sent a text from San Clemente in Orange County. "You up? No emergency but we have flames just south of San Clemente." Five minutes later, his dad quickly wrote back: "Hi I am in Fillmore tonight lots going on luv dad."

Firefighters throughout Southern California were breathing a collective sigh of relief Wednesday as they heard helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft dropping water and fire retardant in the canyons. The fierce winds were finally dying down enough for the aircraft to fly.

Many of the California firefighters are from urban areas, and are not accustomed to making the difficult choices a fast-moving wildfire demands. Some were fighting their third or fourth fire in as many days.

"The bell went off, they jumped on their engines. They went to Malibu, they went to the Magic fire up there at Magic Mountain, and now we're down here," strike team leader Rick Linsky said from the front lines. "I'm very exhausted. How do you fight the exhaustion? We don't have a chance to rest."

"These guys are from Compton, Vernon, Montebello," said strike team leader Linsky. "These are inner-city departments. We're used to going in and busting on a fire for maybe an hour or two, maybe three." Now they've been working for four days.

Linsky reminds his crew of urban firefighters of the alien rules of fighting wildfires. City firefighters try to save everything. Linsky has to teach them when to let a home burn.

"The objective is: Lose a few, save a hundred instead of anchor and save for sure 10 but then maybe lose 80," he said.

Firefighters can't go all-out, all the time, he added. "The winds are going to pick up at night. And at 2 o'clock in the morning, I can't have zombies."

Update 1 on SoCal Fires
25 October 07 11:00 AM | Zach | 4 comment(s)

I think I'm going to take up the task of posting updates about the SoCal fires instead of celeb news for the next few days or so. In the state of California, 1 in 3 people are out of their homes... This is the largest evac ever in the US.

Update courtesy of CNN.com

SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- Conditions that created what California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger dubbed "the perfect storm for fire" eased Wednesday, helping firefighters gain ground against devastating Southern California wildfires.

Winds that gusted as much as 101 mph on Sunday dropped to about 30 mph Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, the dry Santa Ana winds that have fanned the flames, changed direction and began blowing inland from the Pacific Ocean, increasing the humidity and easing the burden on almost 8,900 firefighters in the area.

But the destruction was taking its toll on the men and women on the front lines of the fires.

"It hurts us to have those homes lost. It hurts us to have those injuries. And it is frustrating for us to watch our community be devastated by this," said firefighter Andy Menshek.

As conditions improved, officials allowed people to return to communities that had been off-limits because of intense flames and dense smoke.

"It was home," said Mark Davis, whose two-story Rancho Bernardo house burned to the ground.

"It was us. We had been there 28 years, and it had a lot of our flavor."

The change in the weather also meant that firefighting aircraft -- grounded for most of the week by the winds -- could finally fly.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Capt. Scott McLean called the droning sound of aircraft the "sound of joy."

"Their drops are hitting their mark because the wind is not there," he said.

The rate of burning had slowed significantly by Wednesday.

Still, the fire damage increased to 434,543 acres, said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

That amounted to 679 square miles, or about 10 times the size of Washington, D.C.

By Wednesday evening, the largest fire -- the Witch in northern San Diego County -- was 10 percent contained.

It burned about 196,000 acres before combining with the smaller Poomacha blaze.

Seven fires among the 22 counted Wednesday were contained.

Others, such as the Buckweed Fire in Los Angeles County, were as much as 94 percent contained.

One large fire was a suspected arson.

The FBI and the Orange County Fire Authority are investigating the Santiago fire that has burned more than 19,000 acres.

All three of its points of origin have been declared crime scenes, said Jim Amornino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

A $70,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to the arrest of those responsible for setting the fire.

The blaze was about 50 percent contained after destroying 17 structures.

The smaller Rosa fire in Riverside County, 70 percent contained at just over 400 acres, was also a probably arson, state officials said.

As the fire danger eased, residents were allowed to return to several neighborhoods surrounding San Diego: Del Mar Highlands, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Carmel Valley, Chula Vista and Otay Mesa.

Helicopters were back in the air over the Lake Arrowhead, California, area after all air activity had been suspended because of extremely smoky skies.

In nearby Running Springs, CNN's Ted Rowlands stood in the midst of charred, smoldering rubble strewn with potentially deadly power lines.

"It will be a while before these people will come back. When they do come back, unfortunately they'll have this pretty much to look at," he said Wednesday.

About 500 homes were lost in the mountainous region in San Bernardino County east of Los Angeles.

"Yesterday we couldn't be here, because just this little flame and smoldering pieces of wood would be thrown by the intense winds. ... Now you can see the flames just basically burning themselves out," said Rowlands.

The fires have already destroyed 1,664 structures -- including 1,436 homes -- and they still threaten 25,000 more, Schwarzenegger said Wednesday.

The blazes have killed three people and left 40 hurt, he said.

The governor will fly over the area Thursday with President Bush, who signed a major disaster declaration Wednesday.

It'll speed federal dollars to people whose property losses aren't covered by insurance and will help local and state agencies pay for the emergency response.

The cost of homes destroyed by the wildfires is likely to top $1 billion in San Diego County alone, an emergency official said.

Federal help keeps arriving as officials promise a response based on lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina.

People left homeless by the fires can go online to apply for federal help at FEMA.gov, he said.

There were 76,000 people staying in the 42 shelters opened in San Diego County Wednesday morning, according to San Diego emergency spokeswoman Lynda Pfieffer.

Qualcomm Stadium -- home to the NFL's San Diego Chargers -- housed 11,000 evacuees at the peak of the disaster, but that number dropped to 5,000 Wednesday morning.

Survivor China Episode 5: Love is in the Air

Sorry for posting so late, I had to organize some activities for my school. Stick out tongue

Anyway, episode 5 was definitely the weakest in the series so far. A tremendously unfair twist, followed by a boring immunity challenge had turned the meaning of "Outwit, Outplay, Outlast" to "Outluck, Outluck, Outluck." Let's review what had happened, shall we?

It's day 13, and at Zhan Hu, Erik and Jaime are flirting in the pool, and Jaime, in a moment of "true love" (ahem, ahem) reveals to Erik about the Hidden Immunity Idol that only she knew about! With that, all the advantage she had is gone. Good show, Jaime. Terrific move. Even Britney Spears hooked up with Kevin Federline for over 13 days before marrying him. You're trusting $1 million dollars on some hot stranger on some remote island in Asia? If there was love between them, I think it would be short-lived. Let's see if I'm right.

Then, a boat approaches the Zhan Hu camp, and a fisherman hands a mysterious scroll to the Zhan Hu tribe. Apparently, they're going to choose two Fei Long tribe members to come over to Zhan Hu. Gasp, shock! Here's how their conversation went:

"Oh, my, Gosh! We're getting two FREE membes! There's gonna be 7 members in Zhan Hu and only 5 in Fei Long!"

How stupid can they get? Hello! You SWITCH members, not expect the producers to favour you and just randomly send 2 members to you for free! They choose James and Aaron, the strong guys, so that they will be able to WIN CHALLENGES. (You'll see why I capitalised those two words soon)

Back at Fei Long, the same scroll gets handed over. They choose Frosti and Sharea.

The tribes switch members, and James and Aaron immediately try to curry favour in the Zhan Hu tribe as they know that they are on the chopping board.

Meanwhile, Pei-Gee and Jaime hatch the MOST DIABOLICAL AND STRATEGIC PLAN I'VE EVER SEEN (sarcasm dripping here) to throw the challenge! Then, James and Aaron will be eliminated and then the numbers will be 5-5 during merge!

1. Who ever said a merge would happen when there are 10 players left?

2. If you want to lose challenges, why'd you choose James and Aaron in the first place? To lose?

3. Jaime didn't tell Erik about throwing the challenge. Where's the love now? See, I was right!

Anyway, immunity challenge came and gone, and this time, 2 members from each tribe will swim to a float then dive down to retrieve puzzle pieces then swim back and another 3 members will solve a Chinese zodiac-like puzzle. First to solve wins.

Erik and Aaron did a good job, garnering a huge lead for Zhan Hu. Then, it happened...

Jaime threw one of the pieces into the grass so Zhan Hu couldn't complete the puzzle.

Peih-Gee: "Oh My Gosh! It's so hard putting these pieces together! I can only do logical puzzles, like sudoku!" Come on, that's the DUMBEST excuse I've heard of to throw a challenge.

As expected, Fei Long won. I loved the moment when Jeff picked the piece up from the grass and gave it to Jaime. Everyone could see that Jeff was PISSED.

Back at camp...

"Ha ha ha! We lost the challenge!"

"Ha ha ha! I'm so proud of this fact!"

"Ha ha ha! James is an idiot!"

"Ha ha ha! I have an I.Q. of 3!"

SERIOUSLY, you don't throw a challenge then LAUGH about it. James looked so pissed he could kill somebody. Erik, why are you aligning with these mentally disabled gals and not join the guys? Wrong decision. They say love blinds a person. I now believe that's true.

At Tribal Council, Jeff asked whether the gals threw the challenge.

"Ha ha ha! Jeff looks soooooo pissed, like totally! Oh my gosh, we threw the challenge! Woo hoo! Suck it, James!"

James requested to go home after this. I can see why.

However, the gals decided to vote off Aaron. Big Mistake. You don't piss someone off then don't vote him off. Now James will be looking for VENGEANCE.

It's a strategic risk on P.G. and Jaime's part. We'll see whether it pays off.

P.S. Why didn't they let Jean-Robert do the puzzle instead of swimming? He can read Chinese, right? Tongue Tied
