May 2008 - Posts
Well last week's contest didn't go as I planned. I really hope more people take interest in this weeks contest. I gotta say, its harder to make new contests for this than I thought...
Since there were only 2 people entering this contest, both SANDI and FLUFFY COW will receive Free Passes! Those can be used this week at any time or turned in for 1000 points.
Congrats!
I just added a NEW Feature to the FitCasts!!!
I'm really excited about this one because it lets those of you who cant make the live shows to still participate!!
If you go to the FitCast website, www.z-toc.com/fitcast.htm and click on "ON-DEMAND" there is a new playlist called "NON-Live Shows" I will add 1-2 non-live shows a week that you can do at ANY time! There is a bonus round with those games as well!
What you do is the Fit task associated with the game, then submit your results. At the same time, you will pick a number off of the prize board and get the prize inside! How cool is that?
I hope this makes you guys feel a little less left out when it comes to the live shows. There wont be any new exercises for the non-live shows. These will mostly consist of old Fit Tasks we used to do.
The first Show is already up and running! Try it out when YOU have time!
Its PEDOMETER TIME!!!!
This week you are put to the pedometer test! Walk as much as you can every day. Then report to me how many steps you took. The person who walks the most that day gets a 5 points. The person in 2nd gets 3 points and the person in 3rd gets 1 point.
The winner of this contest will receive a FREE PASS and a FIT CD! Good luck everyone!
On a SIDE contest, we are going to start the Million step challenge!!! except this time you are challenging yourself. So walk every day and once you reach 1 million steps is when you stop. It will take less time than you think. Every time the group hits a million steps, I will give out a prize
So thats 7 prizes after 7 million steps!!!
Once again good luck and ask questions!! Send feedback!! I dont turn anything down. Heck you guys usually have better ideas than I do... lol
Sorry for the delayed post. I was out mulching this weekend and did not have a chance to get here and write. When I did have time last night, i fell asleep on the keyboard and woke up with keys on my forehead and about 5 million d's on the screen... lol
To speak about Week 1 winners, I'm going to give out those weekly passes again! You can use this pass many different ways. 1) you could not use it and receive 1000 bonus points, 2) Use it on the day of your choice to adjust your result by taking the group average, or 3) taking the same score as another fit clubber (of your choice) you wont be told what their score is before hand though. So congrats SCOUTMOM for that Week 1 win!
Here's this weeks results, then I will talk about baselines
Contestant 7 -- 1000
Contestant 6 -- 21000
Contestant 5 -- 29369
Contestant 4 -- 41962
Contestant 3 -- 47721
Contestant 2 -- 52373
Contestant 1 -- 70500
Alright, once again, I was the highest so contestants 2-4 get the top spots!! In 3rd place (which receives 3 raffle tickets) is SCOUTMOM! In 2nd place (which receives 5 raffle tickets) is JOJO31!!! And in first place (which receives 10 raffle tickets and the Free pass) is OLDJERSEYGIRL!!!!
Congrats to all three of you!!
Now for baselines. I was a bit... disappointed this week. I wont lie. Some told me that they didnt have time to do their baselines. Thats why I gave each pair a set of days in which they can report their baseline information. On day one of that, you do your crunches, side crunches and stationary running. Then the 2nd day you can do the rest of it. That was my initial hope for that.
About baselines, scratch the whole idea of your first week being a set. Try your hardest, thats all I'm asking.
Side Crunches: Lowest- 20 Avg- 36 Highest- 62 (JOJO31)
Crunches: Lowest- 11 Avg- 57 Highest- 200 (ZACH)
Pushups: Lowest- 12 Avg- 16 Highest- 20 (ZACH & OLDJERSEYGIRL)
Squats: Lowest- 20 Avg- 63 Highest- 115 (SCOUTMOM)
Stationary Running: Lowest 257 Avg- 556 Highest- 790 (ZACH)
Initial HR: Lowest- 78 Avg- 90 Highest- 98
Final HR: Lowest- 106 Avg- 131 Highest- 186
Congrats to all high scorers! You all receive 2 raffle tickets!!
I will have the next contest post up in a bit!
Hello fitclubbers:
This is long overdue... but I feel that I cannot continue on anymore with my involvement in this club. I have many reasons for this decision, but most of them I do not feel need to be discussed. However, I feel there are a few things I have to bring up in order to clarify a little bit... and not sound like I'm bailing for no apparent reason.
I no longer believe that this club is producing positive results. The competitiveness that has been added this season, along with unhealthy, unrealistic baselines and reports is not conducive to a healthy club full of people trying to better themselves.
Furthermore, I feel that there are a lot of challenges that are completely irrelevant to fit club. This is a club in which people get together to better themselves... why are we doing surveys and searching for videos instead of physical challenges? And on that note... I feel that there are a lot of unfair expectations. Such as fit casts... I work 70 hours a week now. I'm trying to better myself but I have been rendered unable to be part of this group because I cannot participate.
I am not trying to ... er... jeopardize anyone or the club in its self... I just think that a lot of Sandi's good ideas have been warped in a way that is unhealthy. 4 hours of exercise cap? 20 glasses of water? (if you read my last post you will know why I feel this is ridiculous)
Anyway, I have found that working outside fit club with someone INSIDE fit club ... using OLD baselines and motivators is a lot more healthy for me. I'm sorry to leave on bad terms, but I think that these things needed to be said... and I am NOT the only one that feels this way. I have had many discussions with clubbers that no longer see the relevance under the circumstances.
As I aforementioned, I don't want to be on bad terms with anyone. Please feel free to email me anytime you want (kacheena@gmail.com) if you want to chat, want to talk about these issues or simply want to stay in touch. I wish you all the best and I truthfully hope that everyone is getting what they need out of this club.

Wow, is it Friday already? For me that means its the end of more than the end of week 2 though.
Since it is Friday, that means its a "fit" item day!
I decided to go with a product that I already own instead of one that I'm drooling over this time.
Here you go.
This is an AMAZING pedometer!!! It does everything you can imagine. This thing has a 42 day memory so it saves up to 42 days of steps. After that, you hook the pedometer up to your computer and it transfers all the information into a graph. Also, it does NOT have a reset button! It has the clock programed into it so you dont have to worry about bumping the button during the day.
When you first get the pedometer, you have to measure out your stride so that it can calculate how many miles you walk a day. For me, 10,000 steps is about 3.5 miles.
This pedometer puts you in the hole: $29.74
but, if you dont want this number 1 rated pedometer, you can get this cheaper alternative. It does the same thing except it doesnt transfer the steps to your computer. This one is only $19.82
To go along with my partner, Scouts, post...
Make healthy substitutions. Instead of fries or onion rings, order a baked potato with salsa, a side salad, rice or steamed vegetables. Ask to have your dish prepared without (or with less) butter, oil, gravy or cream sauce.
Get dressings on the side. Ask to have low-fat salad dressing, sauces, or mayonnaise served on the side. Use only a little. Or try topping dishes with lemon juice.
Craving dessert? Ask if low-fat items are available, such as:
-
fresh fruit
-
angel food cake
-
sherbet
-
frozen yogurt
If you choose a richer dessert, consider sharing it.
I will post "When eating out--Making the healthier choice for your heart" as soon as I find out how to do it.
Thanks Zach for posting the chart for me. Your a gem!!!

Every day, we are faced with choices. Beef or chicken? Paper or plastic? McDonald's or Wendy's for lunch? Collapse on the couch or do some quick exercises?
How do you choose? How do you know you are making the right choice? I know, it can be tough. But there are some things you can do to help yourself out. The first is to plan ahead. What? Plan ahead? How can that help? Planning lets your choice be a wise and informed one, instead of "oh, wow, I only have 30 minutes for lunch and I still have to stop at the store! I only have time to drive through and grab...something...on my way. What if you had thought about this the night before - or better yet when you did the grocery shopping - would that have made a difference? Sure it would! And you know it, but heck you're way too busy to worry about that.
Stop right there. You are never too busy to think of yourself. Take a moment and pick out a few things you know that are good for you and that you enjoy. Cut up some veggies and put them in a bowl of water in the fridge to keep them fresh and crispy. Then take a couple of minutes (you know, during the commercials for the evening news) and wrap them in a paper towl, put them in a Ziploc bag and get them ready to go for the morning. Bag up some string cheese. Hey, why should the kids have all the fun? Slice up a lemon or lime and pack it off to work. Believe me, a squeeze of fresh citrus in that boring water really perks things up! Skip the McDonald's AND the Wendy's.
Don't let time rule you. Even if you only have 5 minutes, make them yours! Refresh and revitalize yourself with a couple of mini-breaks every day. And the couch versus exercise choice? Sure, have a seat on the couch but...there's nothing that says you can't do some stretches and leg lifts while you sit there and watch the news!
Thanks to all who participated! I received all but one! Thats some nice odds for winning a prize! But one person did AMAZING for not knowing anything about you all. Lets go through the surveys first...

ask them not to do this show and if they are going to have animal
trainers there, I will agree. There is something sad to me about seeing
a magnificent lion or Elephant in a tutu doing tricks for treats....

The correct answer to the bonus question about how many points had been given out so far was: 169,231 which that bonus point went to Mayhew (He guessed 125,000)
Out of 8 members in the Fit Club, 6 people took their attempt at this contest. I couldnt participate for obvious reasons and the other person who couldnt try left for vacation when it was released. So, without further Adu, here are the winners!!
Tied for 4th place with 7 incorrect answers: MAYHEW and SANDI
In third place with 6 incorrect answers: ONEMELODY
Tied for second place (both receive 2 raffle tickets) with 5 incorrect answers: OLDJERSEYGIRL and FLUFFY COW!
And our First place winner with FOUR incorrect answers was...
drum roll
JOJO31!!!!!!!!! The newest member of the group! An amazing win by JoJo! She won a keychain that holds digital pictures so you can show them off to your friends on the go. Congrats JoJo!!!! I'm also throwing in 5 raffle tickets.
I have a couple points of interest this morning. I didnt want to write more than one post so I'll just make it all into one
1. Healthy Web
The website I have for today (it was something better but I forgot all my Fit Club stuff at home today) is www.fitness.gov This is the governments fitness website. Check it out when you have time
2. This weeks 2nd twist
This season you started out with 6 things to collect for baselines. Crunches, pushups, squats, Initial HR, Final HR, and Stationary Running. This season, I'm going to occasionally (not too late in the season) add a baseline for you to do. This week I am adding side crunches. You'll do these along with everything else you do for baselines.
Here's some info about them: Get on the floor into a regular sit-up position (knees bent(, then drop your bent legs to the side, resting them on the floor. Your torso and head should face the ceiling. With your hands behind your head, crunch straight up, then lower.
3. A word on "Maximums"
When I was doing the writeup for this season, I didn't read last seasons carefully enough to note that maximums were not published. So I have changed things up a teeny bit. You will not know these "maximums" throughout the season. I can tell you that exercise minutes is UNDER 240 mins. Water is UNDER 15 glasses. Pedometer reading is UNDER 25,000 steps.
4. A word on this weeks contest
I miss-stated what I was looking for yesterday. I am looking for 30-40 second clips that you would like to watch during the fitcast INSTEAD of commercials. As much as I love ads, I'll eliminate them from the show. Also, try to do the dance videos on yesterday's post and tell me how you do.
Thats the contest. Nothing much more to it.
You can create your own videos if you want. You dont have to.
5. Another word on Baselines
As stated yesterday everything is turned into 1 this week. It is not to punish everyone, it is to put everyones baselines at the same level, at a comparison level.
6. Prizes for finishing in First...
I'm having a hard time deciding what I want to do about these prizes. If you have any suggestions, let me know!!
Alright, thats all I can think of. Have a nice day everyone.
I gotta hand it to you guys, Week 1 numbers were nice but I'm hoping to hit higher numbers next week! Also, later today, I will post the contest information for this week. I want to give you guys a LOT of time for this one
(PS, this is a good time to mention Sandi)
So, here's the breakdown of everyones points! I will announce the top 3 spots and since I'm in the top 3, I obviously wont get the prize so the person under me will get my spot.
Contestant 8 - 38500
Contestant 7 - 41450
Contestant 6 - 42810
Contestant 5 - 49124
Contestant 4 - 51014
Contestant 3 - 55413
Contestant 2 - 69554
Contestant 1 - 78717
Alright I ended up in first so Contestants 2, 3 and 4 are your top three this week!
Contestant 4 was.... OLDJERSEYGIRL!!!
Contestant 3 was...... JOSIE!!!
and Contestant 2 was...................................... SCOUTMOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats scoutmom! You won yourself a ... well, I need to figure out what you won since I took away the free passes... For now, take your shiny 5 raffle tickets and run!
I'll figure out what you won by week's end.
Josie gets 3 raffle tickets and OldJerseyGirl wins a Raffle ticket for third.
Great job everyone!!!
Also, due to popular demand, I will be emailing you what I need from you from now on. I have some twists thrown into that as well.
Alright baselines. A bit shaky. Let me tell you the highs and lows before I rant again...
Crunches: Lowest- 1 Average- 30.5 Highest- 100 (FLUFFY COW)
Pushups: Lowest- 1 Average- 12.5 Highest- 30 (FLUFFY COW)
Squats: Lowest- 1 Average- 45 Highest- 120 (FLUFFY COW)
Stationary Running: Lowest- 120 Average- 411 Highest: 828 (ZACH)
Final HR: Lowest- 80 Average- 130 Highest- 144 (No winner in this category)
Each winner gets 2 raffle tickets towards the raffle of a $5 Amazon.com Gift Certificate which will be happening during the week of June 2.
Alright, lets shake things up! These were your initial baselines. EVERYTHING this week appears as a 1 in my books. If you did 20 crunches, its now a SET of crunches. Your new goal is to increase your baselines by SET. So (eh hem Fluffy Cow) if you did 120 Squats this past week, that is now considered your SET. If your SET is 1, I'm going to talk to you about changing it but then again, I can't make you do anything you dont want to.
I really do want to make you work harder though.
Each week your goal is to increase your baselines by a set.
Good luck this week everyone!

Zach, I have a concern. I actually never saw the first post until today, in which it states that: "Water - 20 glasses" is the cap. Working in the medical field gives me just a tad of insight on this number... it is UNSAFE for your body to drink more than 10 glasses of water a day. More than 10 can start to push ALL the Calcium, Iron and other KEY components out of your body. Here is some backup for this claim:
"The average person can consume up to 15 liters of water in a 24-hour period, but drinking too much, too quickly can swell brain cells and cause head pressure."
"Symptoms of fluid overload include a gradual mental dulling, drowsiness, weakness, confusion, coma, convulsions and death."
"Excessive fluid intake can be dangerous because:
* It can cause pulmonary edema, a condition where water enters the lungs.
* It can dilute the electrolytes in your blood and cause low blood-sodium levels (hyponatremia).
* Excessive urination can flush out essential electrolytes, minerals and other compounds."
http://www.diagnose-me.com/cond/C577739.html
I talked to my doctor about this the last time I saw her because I was concerned about my fluid intake. She said that you should not drink more than 10 glasses of water a day unless you are doing excessive exercise (and she means seriously hardcore, 4 hours of exercise straight a day)
Here is another study that was done about runners drinking too much water... people were in danger of DYING.
"the runners who developed the problem tended to be slower, taking more
than four hours to finish the course. That gave them plenty of time to
drink copious amounts of liquid. And drink they did, an average of
three liters, or about 13 cups of water or of a sports drink, so much
that they actually gained weight during the race."
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/14/health/14water.html?ex=1271131200&en=b9b075690fd32849&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt
I think the water intake should be lowered to 10 glasses of water a day. No where does it say that anything more than the 8x8 (8 glasses 8 times a day) rule is necessary, and even that is being called into question in some medical journals. This post started as a reply to the first post but it's gotten too long and is now going to be an actual post. I just wanted to call this into consideration as I do not feel we should have an unsafe cap.
