Fraud, Deception, Cheating? What's Good About The Summer Olympics?
13 August 08 09:47 AM | scoutmom | 4 comment(s)
Some of the fireworks were computer generated; the featured ‘singer' only lip-synched because the girl with the better voice had crooked teeth; some of the Chinese women's gymnastic team are only 14; a Spanish cyclist has become the first Olympic athlete tossed from the Games for failing a drug test; and we won't even go into the censorship issues. Is there nothing good about these Beijing Olympics? You betcha there is! How about the US Men's Relay team edging out the French in an unbelievable comeback to win the gold? How about Michael Phelps himself becoming the winningest Olympian ever when he picked up his fifth gold medal of the Summer Games? Here's what's been completed and what remains for the swimmer: Day Event Time/result Saturday 400 individual medley Gold Sunday 400 free relay Gold Monday 200 free Gold Tuesday 200 butterfly Gold Tuesday 800 free relay Gold Thursday 200 individual medley 10:48 p.m. Friday 100 butterfly 10:10 p.m . It's Official - Brett Favre Headed to the Big Apple
07 August 08 05:55 AM | scoutmom | 2 comment(s)
Yep, as reported first by Fox Sports, Brett Favre has been traded to the New York Jets. As a Bears fan, can I ask just one thing? Can we get on with our lives now, people? I mean, seriously folks, he retired this spring; a grand total of about a hundred people have shown up to chant "Bring Back Brett" since he decided to unretire; it's time to move along, nothing to see here. As announced in the Packers' Press release: "Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay, and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished. It is with some sadness that we make this announcement, but also with the desire for certainty that will allow us to move the team and organization forward in the most positive way possible." Yes, even the Packers are glad tis is over. They moved on with their lives when he retired, and they just weren't ready for him to jump back into things. Good for them.

Spring Has Sprung

It's May; the second month in the Major League Baseball season. But something is seriously amiss here, folks. Let's see, what could be the problem. Mid-May and still dealing with frost warnings? Check. Daily temps still lucky to make it to 50 degrees? Check. Mutant squirrels devastating every last tulip that pokes its head out of the ground? Check. Front lawn a lovely shade of crabgrass green? Check. What could possibly be wrong then? Oh, you mean the Cubs seem to have figured out how to play baseball before it's too late? Gasp! It's the end of the world as we know it! Actually, it's about freaking time! I mean it's only been what, one HUNDRED years since they won the World Series? Now, now, don't panic. After all, just because they seem to have it all together does not mean it won't fall apart down the road. I mean, after all, there's a lovely opportunity for a June swoon or to die in July or even for the August bust (trust me, I've heard them all...

Second Chance Contest
05 February 08 07:28 AM | scoutmom | 2 comment(s)
Since no one correctly predicted the winner of the Super Bowl, how about another contest then? This one was proposed by lilaislin: # aislin123 said on February 4, 2008 05:08 PM: "Well, can we get someone to write on some cheers to the Giants? I got one ... (to the tune of We're Brothers Forever) LOL Giants 'til the end of time Win or lose, I'll always be your fan The cheating Patriots will reign no more ... I love you, Eli :) Anyone who can post the best Giants cheer wins, Scoutmom will be the judge." I think that's a pretty good idea, so I'll tell you what - I will accept cheers, songs or even haiku. The person who comes up with the best one wins the prize. So, get your pom-pons out, rev up your "Rah! Rah!"s and away we go....

Super Bowl...errr...NFL Championship Game Contest
23 January 08 04:16 PM | scoutmom | 10 comment(s)
Since I don't want to break any rules, and since I don't have permission to call this a "Super Bowl Contest" from the NFL, I will have to refer to it this as the "Scoutmom's Sports From The Other Side Who Will Win The NFL Championship Game" Contest. That's right! You have a chance to win a personalized mousepad (brought to you courtesy of aislin123!) How do you play? Well, I'm glad you asked, (wouldn't want to be rude and just TELL you if ya didn't want to know!) All you have to do is guess the winner and the score of the Super...um...you know, the big football game on Sunday, February 3rd. Just send me an email -- with your predictions in the subject -- no later than 12:00 NOON on Feb. 3rd. If more than one person submits the same winners/score, the earliest electronic postmark will determine the winner. In the meantime, why not share what you plan to do the day of the big game! Good luck, and good guessing!

Hyperbole Rules in NFL Playoffs
12 January 08 12:42 PM | scoutmom | 3 comment(s)
It has gotten this bad. Today's playoff game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks is being touted as "The Battle With Seattle". Puh-lease, give me a break! It's a playoff game, sure, but sheesh! Can the Patriots remain unbeaten? Can Tony Romo get his mind of Jessica and back in the game? Can the Colts...oh, never mind! Of the thousands of words being churned out by sports writers everywhere, how many are actually being read? All the fans really care about is their team. The clichés, the clever little titles, the witty repartee - totally extraneous at this point. There is nothing new to be learned that we don't already know. Heck, we even have the answer to "will Brett Favre return next year?" Want another example? How about this from ESPN.com: "In the art of deception, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are true geniuses. Expect their magical ways to continue in this weekend's playoff games." Or SI.com: "Romo's romance...

Figure Skating Champ "Bowman the Showman" Found Dead
11 January 08 11:42 AM | scoutmom | 1 comment(s)
Former US figure skating champion Christopher Bowman was found dead of a possible drug overdose at the age of 40. Bowman, whose nickname came about because of his flair and style on the ice, was pronounced dead at 12:06 PM Friday in a motel in the North Hills section of Los Angeles. An autopsy is planned for this weekend according to Coroner's Lt. Joe Bale, although additional details on the possible overdose were not available. "He just passed away in his sleep," Bowman's mother Joyce, told the Detroit Free Press. "His friend told me that he was fine. He just went to bed and didn't wake up." Bowman won the US men's figure skating titles in 1989 and 1992, and was runner-up in 1987 and 1991. Internationally, he won a silver medal at the 1989 world championships and a bronze in 1990. In the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics he was a member of the US team and finished seventh and fourth respectively. He was a former child actor ( Little House on the Prairie...

Mitchell Report Names Names - Including Roger Clemens
14 December 07 08:02 AM | scoutmom | with no comments
The long awaited, much-speculated on Mitchell Report - all 409 pages of it - has finally been released. And, as promised, it names names. And some of them are pretty big. In fact, there is at least one All Star from every position in baseball. One of the biggest newly released? Roger "The Rocket" Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner. In nearly nine pages of information, Clemens was singled out. Much of that information came from former New York Yankees major league strength and conditioning coach Brian McNamee. Now, granted, not everyone one of the guys named used steroids. No, some were a bit more clever and they are alleged to have used HGH - human growth hormone. While steroids are detectable in a urine test, HGH requires a blood test. And while some of the more than 80 players named were listed as users, others were buyers. As for Clemens, "according to McNamee, from the time that McNamee injected Clemens with Winstrol through the end of the 1998 season, Clemens'...

Favre vs. Testaverde - Old and Olderer!
16 November 07 08:27 PM | scoutmom | with no comments
Green Bay Packers vs. Carolina Panthers: This senior moment is brought to you by Flexall Ultra Plus Rub for Joint Pain - or it should be, anyway!. I couldn't pass on the opportunity to join in the good natured ribbing of Brett Favre and Vinny Testaverde - the oldest quarterback pair in the NFL who will face off on Sunday at Lambeau Field - with a combined age of 82 years, 44 days. Favre, 38 is expected to start opposite Testaverde, who turned 44 on Tuesday. And ever since it has been announced, the jokes have been rolling faster than a walker headed downhill. "Whatever the jokes are, they're good, is the way I look at it," Brett Favre said. "Because we're still playing. And that says a lot." So, just what is being said about the AARP Bowl? How about they're serving prune juice instead of Gatorade; the team dinner will be held at 3 p.m., bingo to follow; it'll be "Cocoon" in cleats. Yep, all that and more. When asked why he though Testaverde...

Barry Bonds Speaks - Does Anybody Care?
02 November 07 09:49 AM | scoutmom | 2 comment(s)
Oh boo hoo, cry me a river, Barry! Barry Bonds, the poster child for steroid use - oh, wait, alleged steroid use - has announced he's going to boycott the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown if they display the "asterisk" ball. In a major assumption, he includes his potential induction into the Hall of Fame. "I won't go. I won't be part of it," Bonds said in an interview with MSNBC on Thursday night. "You can call me, but I won't be there." Like anybody REALLY cares you big loser! After fan voting on a Web site set up by the ball's purchaser, fashion designer Marc Ecko, was tallied the decision was to send the ball to Cooperstown branded with an asterisk. Bonds of course denied knowingly using performance enhancing drugs and called Ecko "an idiot." How does Dale Petroskey, Hall of Fame president feel about it? "It's a historic piece of baseball history" and that the museum would be "delighted" to have...
