Ohio State Makes it Five Straight Over Michigan
22 November 08 09:45 PM | scoutmom | 2 comment(s)
Just to make sure this was TRULY the worst season in 129 years for Michigan, Ohio State whipped 'em good today, winning their fifth straight game - the first time in 105 meetings to win 5 straight - over the hapless Wolverines by an incredibly lopsided 42-7. Ohio State's margin was the biggest by either team in the rivalry since Woody Hayes was coach and oversaw a 50-14 rout of Michigan in 1968. And even though Penn State has wrapped up the Big 10 Conference, by beating Michigan State and guaranteeing a trip to the Rose Bowl, 10th-ranked Ohio State is right behind them. Both have a 7-1 conference record, but Penn State is 11-1 overall, Ohio is 10-2. The Big 10 is certainly the powerhouse in NCAA football this year, with 4 teams ranked in the top 25: Penn State #8 Ohio State #10 Michigan State # 15 Northwestern #24

NCAA Top 25 Rankings AP/USA Today Poll

As we move into Week 7 of NCAA Football, both the AP and USA Today have unbeaten Okalahoma in the #1 spot. In fact, they both have the same Top 10. Now, we all know that this will change as the season moves on, but it's nice to see some consensus to start this year. Is your favorite team in the Top 25 on either poll? Who do you pick to take it all this year? And, more importantly, should we trash the entire BSC process? Week 6 AP Top 25 As of 10/5/2008 USA Today Top 25 Rank Team Record Team Record 1. NCAA Division 3 National Champions
19 December 07 10:00 AM | scoutmom | with no comments
For the third straight year, UW-Whitewater (that's the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for those of you uninitiated to UW speak) made it to the NCAA Division-3 national championship game. For the third straight year, they faced the number one ranked Mount Union (Ohio) team. The team that beat them the last two years. The team that has won 10 national titles in the past 15 years. But this year was different. This year, second-ranked Whitewater broke the mold and beat Mount Union 31-21 in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl XXXV in Salem, Virginia. It also broke Mount Union's 37-game winning streak. Two days before the game, running back Justin Beaver received the Gagliardi Trophy as the best player in NCAA Division-3. He showed why during the game. Beaver ran for 249 yards with one touchdown. During the final minutes of the game, there was an incredible 66-yard run that set up the final touchdown. He did fumble twice, but he certainly made up for it. "I've seen so many people...

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Sports

First you have to wade through the "bad" and the "ugly", but hang with it. The good at the end makes it all worthwhile. 1. Michael Vick is an idiot. 2. Barry Bonds steroid use (oh, sorry, "alleged" steroid use) has turned him into the "Biggest Loser". 3. The New York Mets are pulling a '69 Cubs. Go Phillies! 4. Somebody has finally knocked some sense into Lovie Smith. (However Rex STILL doesn't get it.) 5. Did I already say "Michael Vick is an idiot? Well he's twice the idiot now with the whole marijuana thing. 6. It is not possible for there to be a worse division than the NL Central - the first place team loses and still has their magic number drop (Go Cubs) and the second place team loses, then claims "We're in a situation where we no longer control our own destiny." Huh? 7. Major League umpire Mike Winters is a total putz! 8. Milton Bradley (the player, not the board game manufacturer) has learned an important lesson...
Appalachian State is a Force to be Reckoned With
03 September 07 07:53 PM | scoutmom | with no comments
(Before I am attacked by the grammar police, I know the correct way to say it. "A force with which to be reckoned". It sounds better this way, so sue me.) For all the talk about stunning upsets and references to Michigan choking "on a cupcake", Appalachian State is a little bit more than a team from nowhere. No, Appalachian State is a two-time defending 1-AA national championship team. They are on top of the world in the second tier of Division I and plan on staying there. "Why not enjoy where we are?" Chancellor Kenneth Peacock said Sunday, a day after his school became the first 1-AA team to beat a ranked 1-A team. "At some point it may be the right thing for Appalachian State." Just not right now. Even if they wanted to join 1-A, they couldn't do it now. Western Kentucky is making the move this year to "major" college football, and they will be he last team until at least 2011. Athletic director Charlie Cobb see no reason to rush...

NCAA Football Pre-Season Rankings - AP and USA Today Polls
20 August 07 10:25 AM | scoutmom | with no comments
The NCAA Football pre-season rankings are out and USC's Trojans are on top of both the AP and USA Today polls. It's the third time in 4 years they have been ranked #1 in the AP poll. "It's exactly where we hope and expect to be," coach Pete Carroll said. "It's a symbol of what we're all about." The Trojans have gone 59-6 since 2002, with two national championships and have been No. 1 on the list 82 times. Only three other schools have been on there more (Notre Dame - 95, Okalahoma - 95, and THE Ohio State -88). They fully expect to win it all again this year. "That's what we're here for. We're here to do it better than anybody has ever done it before," Carroll said. "That's the single thought. That's what drives us. If that's the case, you want to be No. 1 forever." For the Big Ten, The Wisconsin Badgers are 7th on both lists, with Michigan 5th, Ohio State 10th on the AP and 11th on the USA Today list,...

We're down to the Final Four folks!! Who would have thought it would come down to the last second, or even overtime, so many times during March Madness! True to form, it took overtime for Georgetown to beat North Carolina, overcoming an 11-point deficit in the second half, then running up 14 straight points in overtime to stop the #1 seed Tar Heels dead in their tracks. Now, we're down to UCLA vs. Florida and Ohio State vs. Georgetown on Saturday.

The Luck of The Irish Couldn't Help Notre Dame...or Marquette...or Arizona...or......

Faith and begorrah, it wasn't meant to be. Notre Dame fell to Winthrop 74-64 Friday. (Winthrop!?!) So, we've wiped out 32 teams in Round 1, Round 2 is underway as we make our way through to the Final Four and, ultimately, the National Championship. To see the current bracket on the NCAA site, click here . Okay, admit it, how many of you had Duke going at least to the Sweet Sixteen, if not the Final Four? How much further will VCA be able to take it? I have to say it, although Marquette was ranked higher, albeit slightly, than Michigan State, their play this season their playing has been inconsistent at best, and that's what we saw on Thursday. I was not surprised to see them be "one and done". Wisconsin, on the other hand, was able to figure it out in time to recover from an 18 point deficit to rally past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Was it really Wisconsin pulling it together or just that newcomer Corpus Christi didn't have the tournament experience to carry it through? I'd like to think...

Hail to the Chief! Chief Illiniwek Dances His Last Dance Tonight
21 February 07 06:47 PM | scoutmom | 2 comment(s)
Chief Illiniwek, mascot for the University of Illinois since 1926, is performing his last dance tonight. The University, which chose to accept sanctions since 2005, rather than retire it's beloved Chief has finally succumbed to the pressure from the NCAA and a few activists. Never portrayed as cartoonish, or in any way other than with extreme pride, the Chief is finished. The Chief, debuted in a homemade costume during an Illini football game in 1926, has been a subject of turmoil for many years. His supporters see the dancing mascot and his elaborate costume as an honored symbol of both American Indian tradition and Illini sports. The opponents, including some American Indians and university academics, say the chief and his dance are racist and insulting. And yet, the Florida Seminoles not only endorse, but embrace being the symbol of Florida State. Apparently all it takes is SOMEONE to be offended, regardless of how it is presented. I grew up in Illinois, family and friends attended...

Georgetown Celebrates 100th Anniversary by Beating Marquette
11 February 07 12:22 PM | scoutmom | with no comments
It was a day of historic proportion for the Georgetown Hoyas' men's basketball team. Celebrating their 100th anniversary, the 22nd-ranked Hoyas faced the No. 11 Marquette Golden Eagles. Coach John Thompson was nervous about falling flat on such a huge weekend. Unfortunately for some of us, he didn't need to worry, as Georgetown topped Marquette with a 76-58 win. Marquette's speed was no match for Georgetown's size. The Golden Eagles started the game 3-14 from the field, and that set up the rest of the game. Even with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to one, they weren't able to continue to play at that level and they were down by 28-26 at the half. The Hoya's Roy Hibbert showed he was made of the same stuff as other great Georgetown centers with 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Jeff Green matched his career-high with 24 points. It was the seventh-straight win for the Hoyas (18-5, 8-2 Big East). For Marquette Golden Eagles, Ousmane Barro had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guards Dominic James...
