Fluffy's Football Report

Ok... the Wisconsin Badgers seem to be doing pretty good!  After some looking around online, I have discovered that they are 5-0 overall in the "big 10" and 2-0 in their conference... If anyone can explain this, that would help immensely!  It appears that the AP and the coaches have ranked them #5.  This leads me to an interesting thought. Could it be... that college football is just the American Idol of sports???  I mean, people get to vote on this stuff???  How cool would that be if we all got to vote who gets to be in the Super Bowl!?!?!  It could be fun to let America vote in their fave teams...  Anyway...

Go Badgers!!!!

Let me try here:

College football teams, just like their professional counterparts, belong to a "division".  The division for the Badgers is The Big 10 (please disregard that there are 11 teams in the Big 10, that's totally irrelevant at this point).

The vote by the AP and the Coaches' Poll has some to do with the teams record, plus they consider factors like how good (i.e., ranked) are their opponents, how did they fare against their previous opponents (ranked or not), etc.  So, a team that is ranked in the top 25 one week, who happens to lose to an unranked team?  They're going to drop in the rankings.  Even if they beat a lesser (by ranking) team, but the score is close, they'll probably drop.

HOWEVER, there are some teams that will always rank higher (or lower) than others no matter what.  Why?  Because their program doesn't get the respect it probably deserves.

And yes, it would be WAY cool if we got to vote who we wanted in the Super Bowl!

In college football we don't play in the Superbowl, we play in the National Championship game, which is called one of four bowl games.  These four games usually rank the top eight teams in the country at the end of the year.  They are....the Orange Bowl, The Rose bowl, The Fiesta Bowl, and the Sugar Bowl.  They are rotated every year for the two teams ranked 1 and 2 to see who plays for the National Championship.  Again, this is voted on by the coaches  and AP voters.  Apparently it is very hard to become an AP Poll voter, you must have money, power, fame, etc.  Who knows?  Anyway most people don't like this because the same teams stay nationaly ranked every year based on how many games they win and loose.  This may not be a fair evaluation based on how diffcult their schedule is.  So called good teams can play a bunch of nobody's every year and get to be the National champion.  This is why most of the country is pushing for a 32 team playoff system, kind of like their professional counterparts.  This would be cause for a lot more exciting football.
