"Dear Friend,

I wanted to take this chance to thank everyone who came out to vote during the ICAO elections. It’s my honour to serve on the governing Council of the body that oversees the 35,000 Chartered Accountants in Ontario.

If you asked me a year ago if I thought that I would be in this position, I would have had said no. The reason why I chose to run for such a position is that I wanted better governance, greater transparency, and a chance for all CAs to choose their future path.

You can imagine my surprise when I started to get questioned after the following message was sent out to Ontario CAs:

www.icao.on.ca/.../COM20120627.htm

After some people read the message, they were left thinking that I am part of a group that is very committed to the unification. Some of you have even directed me to posts about this topic on forums such as The Future CPA Canada on LinkedIn. While I don’t wish to speak on behalf of the author of the message, I’d like to assure you that I am in no way supportive of any proposal that is detrimental to CAs in industry and public practice nor am I supportive of an initiative that would not be in the public interest. At this point, I’m worried that we may be heading in a direction that will see our brand being diluted which is detrimental to many people. Furthermore, many of the issues that we face may be solved without unification. It simply makes more sense to choose a path that is less detrimental to us and the public at large.

For those of you that voted for me and my running mates, I thank you once again for your support. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Best Regards,

Arnie"

ABD: the time to speak up is when the reviews are being written up. Once the results are delivered it's usually too late. Good topic to write about in the near future though!

Advice needed please:

My first review is coming up soon (I think October. That's when we get raises and bonuses anyway.)

What should I be prepared to do? I could just go and be a passive participant, listen to the partner tell me what I need to work on, and go on my way. But it seems like the "competitive" thing to do would be to be ready to talk myself up a bit.

Any advice?
