Probably one of the biggest challenges I've gone through so far is to get a job during the CA recruit. I think the best advice is keep busy, and don't turn down anything that gives you some relevant business experience. That's how I got my job at GT. Krupo, do you have any tips on how to stand out from the crowd in a firm? I'm starting in my small business group, but plan to transfer to audit after a year. Want to perform well so I won't have any problems transferring.

Now i'm starting to get a better understanding....

I have recently graduated in accounting and moved to Toronto to pursue my CA deg. In order to register as a CA student, I needed to secure employment in a CA firm. I have desperately applied, without success, to CA firms all of last year. The only response I have been getting from these firms is that they are not hiring. I had no idea that they were even laying off hundreds and did not need me, the new comer. I was still stuck on the news of 2006 that these firms were in short supply of CA s and CA students. This whole employment process is so frustrating! Would you have any advice for someone trying to get into the field?

Not much in the way of details though, so I'm assuming this is a notch above 'rumour' level. A notch above, since there's nothing particularly outrageous about it, other than the fact they're hitting juniors (1st/2nd year hires). Ouch.

Just out of curiosity, how much lay offs are there in the accounting firms? What is causing all these lay offs? I thought the CA firms had a shortage of workers and they were hiring like crazy? I’m not really in the accounting field, so I guess I’m behind on the new…
