December 2010 - Posts
I just mentioned CH Canada last week.
2 days after my post, they went bankrupt.
Ouch.
Here's a list of the dead sites, courtesy of the bankruptcy trustee:
As a consequence of the bankruptcy, DB Media will not be fulfilling
any customer orders through its DVD clubs as of December 9, 2010 as the
Canadian operations have ceased. The following lists the DVD Clubs
affected by the bankruptcy:
DVD CLUB: http://www.columbiahouse.ca/
DVD CLUB: http://www.columbiahousecanada.com
CHCanada: http://www.chcanada.com/
French CHCanada: http://www.cineetcie.ca/
HH: http://www.healthharmony.ca/
Bookscene: http://www.bookscene.ca/
Although the company is dead, and no more shipments will be going out, if you owe money, they'd like you to pay up:
A&M Canada, serving as Trustee, is now in the process of collecting
amounts owed to the book and DVD clubs. If you have an outstanding
amount owing to DB Media, we would appreciate immediate payment of your
account in full.
What a very polite sentiment. Hopefully they don't encounter a scenario where they try to get someone to pay for items that won't end up being shipped out.
Of course since I'm a CA, I probably should have trademarked and registered www.moviesbymail.ca, the website of an imaginary company included on the 2006 UFE myself, since the Institute itself probably would've considered the possibly money they could have made from squatting on that domain to be immaterial.
Well it was valuable enough for Columbia House Canada, who acquired it, and promptly redirected it to their main site - www.chcanada.com.
In the age of Netflix streaming online, though, does "CHC" really have much of a future though? Blockbuster, the other company I namechecked in that old article has, after all, gone bankrupt.

Another business from the "What were they thinking?" collection
Thanks again to Jaycee for drawing attention to that ancient post, from the 2006 UFE series I can't believe I sat down and wrote in the middle of the process.
Funny how things you went through a mere four years ago have a way of disappearing from memory.
Congratulations to the successful writers of the 2011 Uniform Final Evaluation!
A special shout-out to fellow CA blogger Jaycee - she made it as well!
She was posting a very readable account of her experiences leading up to the exam - it's well worth a read on her site.
Ontario results are available here - it's usually available online for a few weeks. There'll be a massive newspaper ad coming up soon - per the ICAO, "A national announcement of all successful UFE writers in Canada,
listed by province, will be published in La Presse on Thursday, January
20, 2011 and the Globe and Mail on Friday, January 21, 2011".
As my two-month hiatus indicates, I've been a bit busy, so feel free to figure things out at mycasite if need details for other regions or have other questions about the UFE.
