Alien Architecture

Ferrari World Theme Park

Ferrari World Theme Park

I didn't know anything at all about this unusual piece of architecture until just a couple of months ago when our son informed us that he was going to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for a job. He will be a project coordinator for the installation of some of their lighting systems from what I understand, although what he does for a living has never really quite penetrated my technologically challenged brain. Oh, the stories I could tell of this boy's adventures around the world....

Personally, it looks like a giant alien life form, sucking us dry to me--although it is supposed to represent the double curve side profile of the Ferrari GT body. Either that, or a giant bio-hazard symbol. Hmm...

The theme park itself is located between Abu Dhabi and Dubai and is very near completion. Here are some fast facts:

World's largest indoor theme park

World's fastest roller coaster--traveling at speeds in excess of 124 mph

Racetrack that will host the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

G force experience that takes passengers on a ride up over 62 m through the roof and back down again

Flume ride through the heart of a Ferrari 599 engine

And many more...

It will be interesting to hear what my youngest has to say of the experiences he has over there!

World's Tallest Building

Buj Dubai, the world's tallest building

Here is another piece of 'one of a kind' architecture in Dubai that my son has marveled over. Normal sized skyscrapers are dwarfed by it's massive height, and it is still not complete. This one makes me nervous!

Well, that job didn't last long! NOT my son's cup of tea, couldn't stand the prejudice and exploitation of the labor force (mostly Indian and Phillipino), the lack of management, the inability to do his job because of: lack of supplies, lack of equipment, lack of translators to communicate with his work crew, and lack of timely payment (always late, never all of it). If they get that job done, it will be a miracle, and I don't think I would trust any of the construction in the emirates--sounds like it is all pretty shoddy work.

Oh, and he has decided he's going to pursue another career, so it's back to school at the tender age of 28! Good grief....
