gadget.Solar Digital Window Thermometer
16 December 09 10:00 AM | Zach | 1 comment(s)
Window thermometers are a convenient thing to keep around. They keep you informed of the temperature outside, so that you aren’t stuck going outside to find out just how cold or warm it is outdoors. Well this window thermometer does tell the temperature just like you might have guessed, but it also manages to do it in an eco-friendly manner. This thermometer sticks to the window and can easily be removed when you want to clean the window. It’ll let you know the current temperature, as well as stating the high and low temperatures for the day. It’s solar powered and stores away the energy so that it’ll continue to work even at night or in low light situations. You can purchase the Solar Digital Window Thermometer for $25 from Amazon .

gadget. Zerokill Reflectors to help cut down on roadkill
09 December 09 10:00 AM | Zach | with no comments
I’ve had my fair share of close calls when it comes to hitting deer, I’ve actually only hit one rabbit, had a close encounter with a deer this week (he hit me, no dents but he probably has a massive headache). Considering how many animals I’ve managed to dodge, believe me, that’s an accomplishment. Anything that would make the odds of hitting an animal of any size less likely would make driving a lot less hazardous for a great deal of drivers. This solar powered animal warning system charges all day long. It gives off a subtle blinking LED light that flips on when it detects an animal nearby. It alerts the motorist so that they can slow down. It also reflects the oncoming car’s headlights. It makes it so the light bounces sideways in order to warn the animals and hopefully get them to run the other direction. Right now these Zerokill reflectors are just a concept by Sungi Kim and Hozin Song.

gadget.EKO Stoplight
05 December 09 09:00 AM | Zach | with no comments
No one enjoys sitting at a stoplight. As you sit there you get to contemplate all kinds of things. Like wondering how much of your life has been wasted waiting on stoplights. Then you notice you’ve been sitting there a good long while and begin to wonder if the light will ever change. Then comes the agitation and impatience. Well instead of wondering how long you’ll be at that ridiculous light, you could know exactly how much time you have left if only your city would install these Eko Stoplights. It shows you just how much time you have left by counting down. This design by Damjan Stanković was actually created for its eco-friendly benefits. With this timer you’d be able to casually sit at the light and know just how long you have. Which means you could shut off your engine to reduce the amount of gas you’re burning up while you’re sitting still. Personally I’m just excited at the idea of getting a visual reminder of how much time I have left.

gadget.Water-Powered Can Clock
30 November 09 10:00 AM | Zach | with no comments
If you have an area that you could really use just a normal clock, you might as well make it an eco-friendly one. Sure, you could just hang a battery powered wall clock just as easily, but then you’re stuck buying batteries. With this all you have to do is remember to refill it with water and thankfully you don’t even have to do that very often. These clocks would be great to sit on a desk or tabletop to make it easier to keep track of the time. The water in the can will actually last between 6 to 12 months before you need to add water to the clock. Which means the clock won’t really take any more maintenance than a normal clock with batteries would. Plus, since it doesn’t require batteries it’ll also run cheaper than the rest. When you combine the fact that it runs cheaply with it being a cheap clock to begin with, it makes it an ideal arrangement. You can purchase it for £9.99 or about $16 through Green Stamp .

gadget.USB Sun Drive Solar Charger
25 August 09 08:00 AM | Zach | with no comments
Solar chargers are thankfully getting smaller and smaller, which is good for those of us that prefer to use renewable energy every chance we get. It’s also great for those that just would like to have a small solar charger in case of an emergency. This one is plenty small enough that it could even easily fit into your pocket. It’s ideal for all of your smaller gadgets to give you a charge when you’re in dire need of one. Something like this would not only be great to have around, but having a spare one to keep in your car just in case of emergencies would be great too. You can charge up cellphones, MP3 players and digital cameras. This small Sun Drive is actually only 64mm by 25.8mm. On a full charge it’ll give your phone up to 100 minutes of continuous talk time and up to 25 hours of standby time on a single charge. The solar panel isn’t out just yet and there’s no real price right now. When it does come out though, it looks like it’s at least initially going to only be hitting the South...

gadget. Smart Solar Roto Basket Hook spins your plants!
24 August 09 02:00 PM | Zach | with no comments
My gardening talents have always been fairly limited, it seems that every year I kill a few more plants, but I’m definitely not skilled. I’m sure I’m not the only one that envies the perfectly symmetrical plants that hang at the homes of people that aren’t so bad at gardening. Well now instead of attempting to remember to rotate your plant, you can have a gizmo to do it for you. You won’t even have to remember to change the batteries. Just hang this from one of your hanging plant hooks and then hang a plant from the other end of the gadget. You won’t ever have to change out the batteries since this gadget is completely solar powered. The brighter the sun is that day, the more the plant turns. Although be careful when hanging up your basket since this hook can only hold a maximum of 27 pounds. You can purchase these Smart Solar Roto Basket hooks for $14.95 a piece from Amazon . Psst! gadget. Envirobank
06 May 09 10:00 AM | Zach | with no comments
This next product is for those who are truly “greening their routine”. Envirobank has figured out a way that consumers can deposit their recyclables in a conveniently located machine, and give them a cash reward for their ecologically sound actions. These machines have been called “reverse vending machines” as users give aluminum cans to the machine, and it gives them money right back. In addition to aluminum cans, these machines accept PET, HDPE, and PVC recyclable materials as well as brown, clear, and green glass. My sources say that some of these machines can hold up to 3,000 containers. I am assuming that some recycler eventually comes by and picks up all the drop-offs, replenishes the money slot, and the recyclables will already be cleaned and crushed. I believe that in order to receive the payments for the recycled trash, the user needs to watch a video via an LCD screen on the machine itself. This new system of reverse vending machines has already been deployed in Australia, but...

gadget.Moody Message Pad Hub
03 April 09 10:00 AM | Zach | with no comments
This next device, the USB Moody 3-Port Hub and Erasable Memo Pad, is one that I believe that everyone needs. I can’t begin to tell you how many times that I have been sitting at my computer and had to write down a number. I then have to put the phone in that place in between my neck and my shoulder and then type it onto some Notepad document, only to lose it later after I close my computer and forget to write it down. Now, if I had some erasable pad to write down the number, that would be another thing. Granted, this product isn’t a Wacom Tablet, and doesn’t transfer the number onto a digital file for a Paint program, but do you really need that? Not only is this product environmentally friendly, but it has a mood light with three colors. So if you want to see some periodic flashes of blue, red, and green as you work on the computer, this is the product for you. The USB Moody 3-Port Hub with Erasable Memo Pad plugs into the computer via USB, and has 3 USB ports so you can plug other devices...

gadget. Inlet-Outlet
11 March 09 10:00 AM | Zach | 2 comment(s)
There is some commercial that says: “We are a nation of consumers, and there is nothing wrong with that”. Every time I hear that, I can’t help but think: “yes there is, consumers use up energy, and we shouldn’t use up all the energy in the world!” After all, every home has several outlets that do nothing but suck up a lot of power and increase the consumers’ bills. Granted, we may need the devices that we plug into the wall, but there is no way to give back the power that we take except in the form of money. Fortunately, someone has invented the Inlet-Outlet which allows you to put power back into your wall. So how can you give it back? Try connecting it to some exercise equipment. You might as well be creating energy as you are burning calories. I suppose you could connect it to a hamster cage if you want to add just a little bit of juice. I don’t know why the Inlet-Outlet has a weird connect that resembles an oversized USB. Couldn’t they just make it so it looks like your average two...

gadget.Water Powered Alarm Clock
27 February 09 10:00 AM | Zach | with no comments
Earlier this week we had the eco-friendly mp3 Player, we've also had the composter, now we have the eco-friendly Alarm clock! Have you ever been late because you forgot to set your alarm? Your boss might buy that excuse, but imagine telling him or her this one: “Sorry I’m late, but I forgot to pour water into my alarm clock”. Yes, it does make sense if you own the Water Powered Alarm Clock. This is one of those eco-friendly gadgets that doesn’t require a battery or power cord. All you need to do is “just add water”. Apparently, the evaporation creates a constant supply of energy, using an electrochemical reaction between the electrodes and the water. Believe it or not, you only need to fill the Water Powered Alarm Clock once every three months for it to work. Looks like the “I forgot to pour water into my alarm clock” excuse will only work four times a year. In addition to telling the time, the Water Powered Alarm Clock can also give you a temperature reading as well. I’m not really...

gadget.Rapid No Turn Composter
25 February 09 10:00 AM | Zach | with no comments
Want to go green in your lifestyle but am not too sure where to continue after getting that hybrid car for the family? How about purchasing items that use recycled material as packaging, as well as turning your food scraps into compost for a much more fertile garden afterwards? Instead of making the compost yourself using the traditional methods, you can always harness the power of today’s technology to help you out in the form of the Rapid No Turn Composter. "This is the patented three-chamber bin that turns organic matter into compost in half the time of typical methods, without requiring frequent turning for aeration. Vegetable scraps, lawn refuse, and other raw materials are mixed in the top chamber where solar energy absorbed by the bin’s black polypropylene sides and lid (15% recycled) starts the decomposition process. After about a month, material can be easily moved to the middle chamber for further decomposition by simply pulling out a panel. As it continues to break down...

gadget.Eco-Media Player
23 February 09 10:00 AM | Zach | with no comments
Being green while listening to your iPod aren’t two states of being that you would naturally think relate to each other. Even if you listen to lots of Jack Johnson. Well now you can feel good about being a touch anti-social with your MP3 player. The Eco-Media Player will pump out your beats without using electricity. How you do power Kid Rock then you ask? The energy comes from you. Literally. The Eco-Media Player will work after you’ve wound it up. Like a really old alarm clock. It’s not a gadget that’s going back in time though, it’s actually an attempt to take us forward in the world with minimal impact on the environment. You don’t have to stand there whirring away for ages to listen to one track. One minute of winding action will provide you with up to 45 minutes of playback. So fortunately - or unfortunately- you won’t end up with the bicep of Arnie anytime soon from this. Just because it is first and foremost an eco-gadget, doesn’t mean that it’s therefore lacking in other features...
