I feel the application of modeling something from your imagination in any artistic media or environment should be protected as a form of expression. I don't think someone should be free to create and share virtual child pornography. I also don't think that laws created to protect real people from pedophiles should be applied to virtual producers of child porn. Only because the laws are designed to discourage people from causing detrimental harm to children.

This article goes hand in hand with another I read about a case in session now. The one I'm referring to claims a boot leg fashion modeler in second life stole style ideas from another modeler who claimed the act had a negative impact on her virtual business which at this time is her sole source of income. With business running entirely on virtual property platforms (i.e. second life) it is imperative that we protect their ability to be creative, and protect those creations just like any other type of creative media like books, magazines, and movies.

I think the pornography case shows we need to be careful about legislating an act of creativity, simply because we don't like all the possibilities that can arise from doing so. I hope any future changes in legislation regarding virtual property consider the an artists free right to be creative, while providing the protection and legal support the users, and the environment their creations exist in needs, to function as designed.

That is just silly! Knowing most people, those little pop up cops would just encourage you to visit the website and see what you're not supposed to be seeing instead of warn you away! Dumb.

In 2004, a Payless Car Rental franchisee was sued (successfully) for failing to notify customers that vehicles were equipped with GPS monitoring, and then charing the customers a $1 per mile surchage when they left the state: www.btnmag.com/.../article_display.jsp

Further, beginning January 1, 2005 car rental agencies in California were banned from using GPS to monitor its customers.

In a previous case in Connecticut, a rental company had used GPS to monitor its customers speed and charge them for exceeding a speed threshold. That practice was banned there and was cited in the California decision.

Canadian banks are taking a slightly less 'mean' approach - but even harsher in other ways: add the additional security protocols, or access to your online banking will be shut off until you do. You get a grace period before it kicks in.
